| WELCA Update |
► The April WELCA outreach project is a collection for CHILDREN AND FAMILIES OF IOWA/FAMILY VIOLENCE CENTER. The congregation is invited to participate in donating. The most urgent needs are: diapers (all sizes, but especially sizes 5 & 6), shampoo, combs, brushes, disposable razors, hair dryers, toothpaste, deodorant, bath towels, wash cloths, twin-size sheets, adult and children's new underwear and socks, new bras, new toys, and medium-size tote bags. Please place in the marked boxes near the office reception desk or in the hallway outside Neumann Hall. Your support is really appreciated! |

Children's Ministry | ► All kids are invited to Sunday School at 9:55. Age 3 years meet in room 5; Preschool-Room 6; Kindergarten-Room 7; first through sixth grade will start in the chapel and then move to their classrooms on 2nd floor. ► Vacation Bible School will be June 27-30 for Kindergarten - Sixth graders. Registrations will be available in May. |
| Holy Week Opportunity for All Ages | Please come and "Journey to the Cross" with interactive, contemplative prayer stations suitable for all ages. These stations have been designed to help you think about Jesus' last week on Earth. This is a great way to make the Holy Week and Easter story come alive-if you are just starting to understand the meaning of Easter or if you are a long-time veteran of Easter preparations and celebrations or if you are somewhere in between! These stations have been organized by the 7th and 8th grade Confirmation class. |
| Small Groups & Christian Involvement | |
► Couples/Singles Group will attend the Repertory Theater of Iowa production of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" at Des Moines Social Club's new location in the Kirkwood Hotel on Saturday, April 30 at 7:30 pm Cost: $15/person. Let Karen Ritchie know by either e-mail wkritchie3@mac.com or 279-0153, if you can attend and if you might be interested in going out for dinner preceding the production. ► The St. John's Gardening Tour Schedule is set for spring/summer/fall of 2011. There are a few schedules in the Welcome Center in the lounge for anyone interested. If you would like to be added to the Gardening small group e-mail, please let Darla know at darlastiles@stjohnsdsm.org. The first scheduled tour is May 24th (meeting at Loki's Gardens west of Des Moines). ► Mark your calendars to attend our all congregational Baseball and Apple Pie event on Sunday, June 5. There will be a picnic with an apple pie contest on the grass near the parking lot at Principal Park between 11:30 and 1:00. We will then attend an I-Cub's game at 1:05. Sign-ups will begin in May. |
| WIRED | ► The WIRED group will be providing food for the shelter on Monday, April 18. Please let Karen Andeweg know what you can bring and/or if you can help at the shelter that evening. Sign up in the lounge under the April 18th sign that says WIRED. (kandeweg@excite.com) ► WIRED cooking will meet on Saturday, May 7, at noon, at Country Club Market with chef Terrie Kohl. Please RSVP by May 1, to carollunde@q.com if you can attend. It will last about 2 hours. Cost is $45 plus tax and gratuity, cash or check. Credit cards add 10%. Check with Carol for more details. ► WIRED yoga: There is a possibility of starting a second session (April/May). Contact Sue Tew (sue4youth@aol.com) if you are interested. |
| New Members Class | May 1st is the date; the time is noon. We will conclude at approximately 2:30. A light lunch will be provided.Several council and staff members will be on hand to meet and greet you. You will be introduced to the myriad of ministry and social opportunities available to our members. The ways to get involved are various and vast. Plus, you'll never find a nicer, more welcoming group of people anywhere! A light lunch will be provided. To reserve a spot in class, or if you have questions, call Katie at 243-7691. We request that you call ahead so we have enough food and materials for all. Child care can be provided; requests needed by April 15 to make the arrangements. |
| Way of the Cross | Join the annual downtown Way of the Cross procession & reflection on Good Friday, April 22, 1:30-3:30 p.m. We will begin at 1:30 in front of First United Methodist Church (10th & Pleasant) and will proceed to seven other stops: Connection Café (7th & Grand), Catholic Pastoral Center (6th & Grand), Elsie Mason Manor (5th & Grand), Nollen Plaza (Locust & 3rd), Polk County Jail (Cherry & 6th), Principal Financial (Corporate One building: High between 7th & 8th), and Principal Park (SW corner of 9th & Pleasant). You are welcome to join at any point on the procession, and are encouraged to carry the cross for a small part of the solemn walk. Sponsored by The Bridge, an ecumenical initiative among the four downtown churches: First United Methodist, St. John's Lutheran, St. Ambrose Cathedral and the Cathedral Church of St. Paul.

The stark contrast between violent and non-violent pro-democracy movements in North Africa gives us all new incentive to take advantage of the opportunities we have to promote peaceful methods of resolving conflicts. We will mourn for those lost, pray for those caught in the violence, and celebrate the hope of new and thriving movements for peace. |
| AMOS Fundraiser |  The Fantasticks, the musical, is a presentation of A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy and StageWest Theatre Company. | The Rainbow Ministry Team | ► . . . of St. John's will continue our annual tradition of participating in the Des Moines Gay Pride Parade on Sunday, June 12th, at 1:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for us to represent St. John's as a "Church for All People." St. John's members and friends are invited to join us in the march. Meeting time is 12:30 pm and the location is on the east side of the Capitol near Capitol Avenue in the large parking lot. The parade ends on Robert D. Ray Drive near the river. Feel free to show off your new St. John's Rainbow t-shirt (see below.) If you have any questions regarding this event, contact Bruce Remmey at 515.208.4386. ► Invites you to show our community that you are "in the city for good" and St. John's is "a church for ALL people." We are accepting orders for newly-designed t-shirts. The shirts are sky blue, and are available in adult sizes S, M, L, XL, XXL and youth sizes S, M, L, XL for $16.00 plus tax each. We have openings for three people to serve as voting members to the SE Iowa Synod assembly May 20 - 21 in Coralville. Registration and expenses are paid by St. John's. Contact Pastor Rachel if you are interested ASAP.
