WATERCOLORS BY SCOTT STOUFFER

Since retiring as a architect a few years ago, Scott Stouffer has been painting with watercolors, a passion that he first developed in college.  The sketching and development of building renderings through 50 years of architecture practice still leaves him with a desire to further develop his skills with the media of watercolors.  Scott has had many exhibitions of his work throughout the Des Moines Community.  See his work displayed during January in Weertz Fellowship Hall.

Creating in Community

Creating in Community 2011On Saturday, January 29th, you will have the opportunity to fight the winter blahs and get your creative juices flowing! January is the perfect time to renew your creative energies and explore the arts that you have always wanted to try but haven't had time. Creating in Community offers learning opportunities ranging from the very practical to the fine arts, with instruction provided by professionals in the field, or gifted, skilled amateurs. The series of workshops include quilting, ceramics, thinking through art, cooking, block printing, reader's theatre, creative writing, an art tour of St. John's, wearable art, and social media, which will include facebook, twitter, blogging, etc. Participants are invited to bring 2-3 dozen of their favorite cookie recipe and take part in the Cookie Bake Off. Cookies will be judged by a panel of "celebrity" judges, who will name the Cookie Bake Off Champion! Registration is necessary and due at the church office by Sunday, January 23rd. Register at www.stjohnsdsm.org or by signing up in the narthex between services on January 16th and 23rd. Please contact Kris Joy at bkjoy@q.com with questions.

New Membership Class

New Membership Class► Invite friends and family to join our St. John's community! We will be hosting a new members' class on January 30. We will gather following the 11:00 a.m. service in Neumann. A light lunch will be provided, as will child care if needed. All are welcome. We do need to know numbers to plan ahead so please contact Katie (243-7691 or katiet@stjohnsdsm.org) with questions or to register.

St. John's Nominating Committee
Congregational CouncilAnyone interested in serving on the St. John's nominating committee, please e-mail Carol Dittmer ASAP at dittmercl@msn.com. There are 6 people that serve on this committee, for a 3-year term, plus 1 pastor and the council VP.  Each year two people rotate off the committee, so we are looking for two new people to serve. Our purpose is to meet in late summer/early fall, to begin the search for members of St. John's who are willing to serve on the church council. We will vote on Feb. 6, for the new nominating committee positions. Please consider this as an opportunity to serve St. John's.
Youth Fundraising Auction
Youth MinistrySUPER, AWESOME DONATIONS needed ASAP for the youth fundraising auction, An Evening in Wonderland. The auction will be held @ St. John's on Friday, March 4th from 6:00-9:00 pm. We need awesome things to auction off, so if you have something you would like to donate contact Megan Clausen (meganc@stjohnsdsm.org or 243.7691).
WELCA Update
WELCAWith the  hope that the congregation will want to participate, the WELCA invites you to learn about the Harbor of Hope. The Harbor of Hope accommodates 24 men and serves as an addiction recovery center. As a placement option for the Drug Court participants, it provides an environment for positive growth, mutual respect, hope and solutions that become a blueprint for a successful drug-free life. The executive director is Andy Anderson known to many of us as a long time St. John's member and our evening security person for a number of years. Andy requires the residents to be accountable to a weekly support group, respect a curfew, be employed or seeking work. Residents pay a modest rental fee, are expected to participate in financial training and other expectations for building a more productive and responsible lifestyle. The values the Harbor and Andy proclaim are relationships, responsibility and renewal (harborofhopeiowa.com). For the month of February, WELCA boxes marked Harbor of Hope will be in the reception area and the hallway across from the Chapel. Especially useful are cleaning products: paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap, toilet bowl cleaner and shower cleaner are items that would be appreciated.
Stained Glass Hearts

Stained Glass HeartWe honor those we love on St. Valentine's Day. What better way to honor your loved one than with a gift that also touches the hearts and lives of the world's poorest people? This seven-year project has generated proceeds to build 15 water wells in Africa. We ask for the support of St. John's worshippers once more. Handmade stained glass hearts are $8 each and will be sold before and after all worship services on February 12th & 13th. Proceeds will be shared by the African well project and the Coalition in Support of Hungry Children, which is working to eliminate childhood hunger in Greater Des Moines by 2015. What a blessed way to celebrate the spirit and example of St. Valentine. Direct questions to Angie Larson at 240-1643.
