| Christmas Healing Service | |
Not everyone feels like celebrating in the days leading up to Christmas. Grief, illness, aging, depression, loneliness, unemployment, and loss seem to be magnified by the cultural insistence upon "merriment"...
Several years ago, St. John's began to offer the community a quiet Service of Healing with Anointing & the Laying on of Hands prior to Christmas. This year, that service will be offered twice - on Wednesday, December 22nd, at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 pm. in the Chapel. |
| Children's Ministry | ► Sunday, Jan. 2 at 10:00-Join the Sunday School Classes as they play Christmas Carols on the Kristal Bells (Sanctuary). ► Sunday, Jan. 9 at 10:00-Epiphany Follow the Star Family Event. Meet in the chapel to receive a Magi Passport and a constellation map that will lead you to the best gift of all!!! |
| Small Groups & Christian Involvement | ► WIRED Gathering: Join us for a luncheon and program called "Get a Grip on Clutter & Chaos: Organize to Optimize Your Workday." At the WIRED gathering on Sunday, Jan. 23, Pam Woods, a Certified Professional Organizer®, will share an easy process to organize your work area whether it's in a corporate office, small business or your home. This program is perfect for anyone who is challenged by clutter and chaos. The program will be held at the Rasmussen Center on the Grand View University Campus beginning 12:30 p.m. with a luncheon and program ending by 3:00 p.m. Registration fee is $20 (includes lunch and the program.) Register at www.stjohnsdsm.org/Ministries/WIRED or by signing up in the narthex between services on Jan. 9th and 16th. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to make your days less chaotic, and it is always fun to enjoy lunch with friends. ► WIRED NIGHT OUT: Mark your calendars for Jan. 10, for the first "Night Out." We will get together to talk about ideas for future ideas then attend a movie at the Fleur Theater. We will let you know time and place to meet when the movie schedule is out. ► Photography small group is displaying their photos in Weertz Fellowship Hall the month of December (see notice below). If you have an interest in participating in St. John's photography small group, please contact Rod Snavely at rsnavely@aol.com. ► THANKS to people from St. John's Gardening group who braved the cold weather and chipped away at the frozen soil in the planters to get the winter "planting" done in the 11 planters around the church. Those helping were Dennis Zaabel, Barb John, Judy Reel, Carol Dittmer, Jean and Bob Williams, Margaret Townsend, and Darla Stiles. Many thanks also to Judy Reel, Kelly Schuler, and Roma Youngquist for bringing greenery. Howell's Tree Farm (between Des Moines & Winterset) donated about 130 pieces for our planters! Next time you are at Howell's please tell them how much we appreciate their donation to St. John's planters! ► NIGHT OUT: The next night out will be Friday, Feb. 18, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Join us for bowling and a bite to eat (location to be announced.) Childcare will be available 4:45 - 8:00 pm at the church nursery. Mark your calendars and watch for more information. Facilitators: Amy Wallman Madden, hope2_amy@yahoo.com or 255-3109 or Rachel Corron, rpcorron@gmail.com (313-6645). |
| WELCA Update | ► Just one more week to bring items for NEW DIRECTIONS (shelter for women and children). Deadline is Dec. 19 and our social committee will deliver them in time for Christmas. The congregation is invited to participate in buying Christmas gifts for mothers and children that they can give to each other. The children are largely elementary age, and some early teens. Suggestions might be hats, scarves, gloves and mittens. They will have the opportunity to chose a gift and wrap it. Look for the boxes that will be marked in the narthex and near the office. Thanks to all of you who have already contributed. ► The Mitten Tree is in the Lounge through Jan. 9. Bring any size gloves, mittens, caps and scarves. They will be distributed to homeless shelters, schools and low income residents. Gloves in adult sizes are especially needed. |
| A Year End Reminder | ► Any 2010 contributions, including stock gifts, must be post marked by 12/31/2010. If you have any questions please call 243-7691 and ask to speak with someone in the financial office. When giving stock please notify the finance office at financeoffice@stjohnsdsm.org prior to giving the stock. |
| Holiday Office Hours | ► Please note that in December the office will close at noon on Thursday, the 23rd and open on Tuesday the 28th at 9:00 am. Over New Year's, the office will be closed December 31 and reopen January 4 at 9:00 am. |
