Interfaith Hospitality Network
Interfaith Hospitality Network Logo►  St. John's is assisting at IHN on Dec. 14 and 16. From 5:30 - 7:00 we serve supper and clean up; we serve as evening hosts from 6:00 - 8:00 pm; and from 6:00 pm - 6:00 am, we need overnight hosts (at least one male needed). Food should be delivered by 5:30 pm or we can pick up at St. John''s. Items needed are: servings for 25 people of a main dish, salad, vegetable/starch; two loaves of bread; two gallons of milk; and dessert. When we assisted this past September we had difficulty obtaining the necessary food items. Please give generously to help serve those in need. If you are able to help and have not yet signed up, please contact Jennifer Early at earlyrj@mchsi.com, or 515-274-6872.
Small Groups & Christian Involvement
Small Groups New sm►  New WIRED small groups are forming. All groups are open to all women. Please e-mail the facilitator to let her know of your interest in any of these groups and to receive more information. COOKING CLASSES: Carol Lunde (jclunde@dwx.com) Contact Carol if you're interested in joining. BOOK DISCUSSION:  Mary Ritchie (ritchiem82@gmail.com) Days that seem to work best are Sunday or Saturday mornings or Wednesday evenings. The group talked about reading books related to spirituality but would like more feedback. Anyone interested, please contact Mary. WOMEN'S NIGHT OUT: Lois Murphy and Darla Stiles (frlomurp5@q.com or darlastiles@stjohndsm.org) Mark your calendars for Monday, Jan. 10, for the first "Night Out."  We will get together for a glass of wine and talk about ideas for future "Nights Out," then attend a movie at the Fleur Theater. We will let you know the first part of January what time and place to meet. SERVICE/LEARNING PROJECTS:  Karen Andeweg (kandeweg@bankcsb.com) The group discussed  having a towel and sheet drive for the New Directions Shelter on Grand (also need toiletries). They are in the process of getting more feedback from those interested. Contact Karen to be included in the group e-mail for information. Wii FITNESS: Delaine Marker (gramsmkr@hotmail.com) This group will meet Friday mornings (after the first of the year beginning Jan. 7) at 10:00 am at church in the Fireside Lounge. Wii Fitness has several different areas: exercise, dance (Latin dance, rock, and others-they show you how), yoga, etc.  You can go at your own pace. Anyone interested in joining may contact Delaine.
►  Recreational Reading is meeting  Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 4:30, a week early this month due to the Christmas holidays. The book for discussion is Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese.
►  EAGLES will meet on Friday, Jan. 14, at noon for a potluck and planning session. Bring a dish to share and ideas.
WELCA Update
WELCA►  The Women of the ELCA have NEW DIRECTIONS (shelter for women and children) as their outreach project. The congregation is invited to participate in buying Christmas gifts for mothers and children that they can give to each other. The children are largely elementary age, and some early teens. Suggestions might be hats, scarves, gloves and mittens. They will have the opportunity to chose a gift and wrap it. Look for the boxes that will be marked in the narthex and near the office.
►  The Mitten Tree is in the Lounge through Jan. 9. Bring any size gloves, mittens, caps and scarves. They will be distributed to homeless shelters, schools and low income residents. Gloves in adult sizes are especially needed.
The Gift of Hospitality
Hospitality & Outreach Logo►  Do you have room in your home for a student during three weeks in January? St. John's has been asked to find housing for two male students from Luther. These young men will be doing an internship at the Coalition for Domestic Violence during J-Term.  They will have their own transportation and are willing to do chores in exchange for room and board. (Just a hint ~ remember last January and ALL the snow?!) If you have room in your home and in your heart to help out, please call Katie at 243-7691.
Holiday Office Hours
Clock►  Please note that in December the office will close at noon on Thursday, the 23rd and open on Tuesday the 28th at 9:00 am. Over New Year's, the office will be closed December 31 and reopen January 4 at 9:00 am.
Nordic Choir to Perform in Clive
Luther College Logo►   Luther College Nordic Choir, one of the top college choirs in the nation, will present a concert at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan 16, at Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Ave. The choir will perform sacred choral works. Freewill offering.
