Fields of Hope

► Our growing project near Polk City is about ready to harvest. On Oct. 16, beginning at 10:00 a.m., you can ride in a real combine as our actual farmer brings in the corn! Look for a petting zoo and possibly hayrack rides. We'll bless the harvest and enjoy a real farm picnic - all free - as we finance our Guatemala program helping Mayan families in the high country achieve food security. Bring the family and let the kids see where food really comes from. It's not too late for you to sponsor part of Fields of Hope. (Did you know it costs more than $500 per acre to plant a crop?) To help: write a check to St. John's and note "Fields of Hope" in the memo line. When the crop is sold, 100% of the proceeds goes to the program in Guatemala through Foods Resource Bank. For more information and directions to the site, check out the article in this month's Eagle Call on our website at www.stjohnsdsm.org. ** Jean Williams will be available in the lounge following the 8:45 worship to answer any questions. |
AMOS

► Issues Assembly, Sunday, Oct. 24, 1st United Methodist Church, 1001 Pleasant St., DSM, 3-4:30 p.m. St. John's, an AMOS member, has projected a turnout of 30 members for this event; help us meet our goal! Join members from many mid-Iowa congregations as candidates for elective office on the November 2 ballot are asked to endorse the nonpartisan AMOS issues agenda. We need people power so that candidates will see and feel the force of popular support for the AMOS agenda. Download fact sheets from the AMOS web site: work force development, mental health care, juvenile justice. http://amosiowa.org/node/96

Artist of the Month
|
|
Our very own Louise Koch
Long-time member of St. John's, Louise Koch, is displaying a selection of her beautiful paintings of rural scenes and landscapes in Weertz Fellowship Hall during the month of October. For many years, she was a weekend painter, packing up her oils and canvases and heading for the countryside. Today, she continues to paint landscapes with her new favorite medium, watercolors, which she finds exciting and challenging. Louise started and for many years was in charge of our Artist of the Month exhibitions.
