School Year Blessing

►  On Sunday, August 22nd - the Sunday prior to the beginning of the school year for most of our children - we will offer a blessing of students of all ages, teachers, and school staff during the 8:45am worship service. We also invite you to bring an offering of nonperishable food in your backpack that morning for the "Backpack Buddies" program at the Food Bank of Iowa! This program helps stock the food shelves housed in various elementary & middle schools and Boys & Girls Clubs in the Des Moines Area. Everyone from pre-schoolers to adult learners, teachers & school staff are encouraged to participate!

The theme for the August meeting is "Summer Shots."
►  WOMEN'S GROUP-"WIRED": Women, are you so WIRED by the constraints of your life that you have lost a sense of CONNECTION with other women If so, plan to attend the fall kick off of a new Women's group called WIRED: Women Interested in Renewal, Education, and Discovery. Maybe it is time for you to get "rewired!" A luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, September 26, 12:30 pm at Grand View University at the Rasmussen Center. Mark your calendars now and watch for more details.
►  Dates to save:  Sunday, October 3, is the date for Octoberfest Service and dinner at Jester Park Lodge.  Sunday, November 7, is the date for celebrating St. John's 145th Anniversary.
►  145th Anniversary: A team is planning a celebration of our church's 145th year. If you have any memorabilia, pictures, stories, historical facts, etc., we'd like to hear them. Please call or e-mail Darla Stiles at church, 243-7691, or darlastiles@stjohnsdsm.org to let us know your memories. We would appreciate receiving information by September 1.

►  Calling all ICE CREAM makers!!! Would you be willing to make a batch or two or three of homemade ice cream for an "Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social" at St. John's on August 20th? Or maybe you would rather donate a few dozen homemade cookies or bars? If so, please email/call Megan Clausen (meganc@stjohnsdsm.org OR 243.7691). You can also sign up on the clipboard at the back of the sanctuary! Don't forget to mark your calendars for August 20th at 8:00 pm for ice cream, music from St. John's own Asphalt and Stained Glass, and for an outdoor movie!! For more details check the St. John's website!
►  Do you have any old irons that still work? If so, Megan would like to use them for some craft projects with the middle school students. If you would be willing to donate them to the cause please drop them off at the front desk with Megan's name on them!
►  Come help brighten a day for a sick child. On September 11, from 9:00 to noon meet at the church to help make pillow cases for terminally ill children. All are invited - moms, dads, sons and daughters! If your sewing maching is portable, feel free to bring it. If you can't sew, fabric donations will be appreciated. Faithful Friend

We are searching for
"Faithful Friends"...

... for elderly members who can no longer join us for worship and other activities. Would you be willing to visit with one or two homebound members of St. John's - by phone and in person - on a monthly basis? If so, please consider our "Faithful Friends" ministry, forming this fall. Training in visitation ministry - including sharing Holy Communion with those who are homebound - will be provided for all who are willing to be a "Faithful Friend." Please contact Pastor Bob Speirs or Karen Zaabel (225-8473) for more information and/or to sign up for a training session and receive a visitation assignment. Thank you!

St. John's Photographer

Jacque's interest in photography began early in her life and gained momentum as her children's lives developed. As a result of that interest, she has taken photography classes in college and post-college. She enjoys taking
photos of people, scenery and architecture. Her children tease her about having "her camera attached to her hip."
