School Year Blessing
► On Sunday, August 22nd - the Sunday prior to the beginning of the school year for most of our children - we will offer a blessing of students of all ages, teachers, and school staff during the 8:45am worship service. We also invite you to bring an offering of nonperishable food in your backpack that morning for the "Backpack Buddies" program at the Food Bank of Iowa! This program helps stock the food shelves housed in various elementary & middle schools and Boys & Girls Clubs in the Des Moines Area. Everyone from pre-schoolers to adult learners, teachers & school staff are encouraged to participate!

Small Groups & Christian Involvement ► Recreational Book Club will meet at Caribou Coffee on Wednesday, August 18, at 5:15 to select books for the coming season. All are welcome to participate. ► EAGLES next event will be on August 19. Meet at church at 8:00 am for a day trip to Fairfield to tour the Arts and Convention Center, Maharishi Vedic City (with a unique observatory including 10 masonry sundials displaying movements of the sun, planets and stars), an abbreviated tour of Creative Edge (floor art), abbreviated tour of an organic dairy farm, and a stop at the famous American Gothic House used in Grant Wood's painting, "American Gothic". Members are urged to continue to take pictures of items in nature, architecture, or the church that remind you of alphabet letters or numerals as this might be used as a theme for December's Artist of the Month in Weertz. The theme for the August meeting is "Summer Shots." ► WOMEN'S GROUP-"WIRED": Women, are you so WIRED by the constraints of your life that you have lost a sense of CONNECTION with other women If so, plan to attend the fall kick off of a new Women's group called WIRED: Women Interested in Renewal, Education, and Discovery. Maybe it is time for you to get "rewired!" A luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, September 26, 12:30 pm at Grand View University at the Rasmussen Center. Mark your calendars now and watch for more details. ► Dates to save: Sunday, October 3, is the date for Octoberfest Service and dinner at Jester Park Lodge. Sunday, November 7, is the date for celebrating St. John's 145th Anniversary. ► 145th Anniversary: A team is planning a celebration of our church's 145th year. If you have any memorabilia, pictures, stories, historical facts, etc., we'd like to hear them. Youth Ministry
 ► Calling all ICE CREAM makers!!! Would you be willing to make a batch or two or three of homemade ice cream for an "Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social" at St. John's on August 20th? Or maybe you would rather donate a few dozen homemade cookies or bars? If so, please email/call Megan Clausen (meganc@stjohnsdsm.org OR 243.7691). You can also sign up on the clipboard at the back of the sanctuary! Don't forget to mark your calendars for August 20th at 8:00 pm for ice cream, music from St. John's own Asphalt and Stained Glass, and for an outdoor movie!! For more details check the St. John's website! ► Do you have any old irons that still work? If so, Megan would like to use them for some craft projects with the middle school students. If you would be willing to donate them to the cause please drop them off at the front desk with Megan's name on them! ► Come help brighten a day for a sick child. On September 11, from 9:00 to noon meet at the church to help make pillow cases for terminally ill children. All are invited - moms, dads, sons and daughters! If your sewing maching is portable, feel free to bring it. If you can't sew, fabric donations will be appreciated. Each pillow case uses one and one-third yards of material; we need bright colors and 100% cotton. Any questions, please contact Megan. Thanks!

Dates to Remember: ► September 12-Rally Sunday (Fireside Lounge at 10:00) ► September 19-Sunday School Begins Bibles will be given to 3 year olds and 3rd graders, and Sunday School teachers will be installed at the 8:45 service. ► Sunday School (2010-2011) registrations are available on the table outside the chapel and on our website.

We are searching for "Faithful Friends"...
 ... for elderly members who can no longer join us for worship and other activities. Would you be willing to visit with one or two homebound members of St. John's - by phone and in person - on a monthly basis? If so, please consider our "Faithful Friends" ministry, forming this fall. Training in visitation ministry - including sharing Holy Communion with those who are homebound - will be provided for all who are willing to be a "Faithful Friend." Please contact Pastor Bob Speirs or Karen Zaabel (225-8473) for more information and/or to sign up for a training session and receive a visitation assignment. Thank you!

Lutheran World Relief

► Wow! What a wonderful response to our Lutheran World Relief Health Kit/Layette Project!! Thank you for such generous support throughout the month of July as we gathered soap, hand towels & washcloths, toothbrushes & combs, and receiving blankets!
The August list of items needed to complete the kits & layettes is below. Keep up the good work! - August 14 & 15 Cotton shirts or Onesies and gowns or sleepers - with or without feet. Up to 24 months in size. (New or gently used.)
- August 28 & 29 Washcloths (yes, more washcloths) & receiving blankets. Blankets can be used or new, approx. 36 in. x 36 in., cotton or flannel.

| Jacqueline Warming Another Talented St. John's Photographer
Jacque's interest in photography began early in her life and gained momentum as her children's lives developed. As a result of that interest, she has taken photography classes in college and post-college. She enjoys taking photos of people, scenery and architecture. Her children tease her about having "her camera attached to her hip."
