Did You Know?

Last week St. John's launched a brand new website.  Located at www.stjohnsdsm.org this new website offers some features not found on the old version.  We can create forms to gather volunteers, you can now directly email any staff member through the website, on the back end this new platform is easier to update, and is less expensive.  There are quite a few more features "under the hood" that we may launch in the future.  I would like to extend a special Thank You to Amber Jackson-Elwer for helping design our new banner.  Take a look at the new site and let me know what you think.  Peace, Scott

►  WOMEN'S GROUP-"WIRED":  Women, are you so WIRED by the constraints of your life that you have lost a sense of CONNECTION with other women? If so, watch for the fall kick off of a new Women's group called WIRED: Women Interested in Renewal, Education, and Discovery. Is it time for you to get "rewired!"? More details to come later this summer!

Small Groups &
Christian Involvement

►  Gardening group will meet on Wednesday, August 4, beginning at 6:00 pm at the home of Dennis and Karen Zaabel, 1102 S. 50th Place in West Des Moines. Dennis enjoys adding something new and unique to his garden and has an interesting surprise for this garden tour. You won't want to miss it!
►  St. John's Job Networking Group will meet on Monday, August 9, 5:30 pm, at Gateway Market on MLKing and Woodland. If you are looking for a way to network and connect with others who are job hunting, please join in some great fellowship and sharing of ideas. Questions, contact Ellen Fisher at ellenfisher123@yahoo.com
►  St. John's Moms are collecting DVD's, games, books, craft items, scrapbooking supplies, etc. - items that help occupy the hours of some very long days for expectant moms on bed rest  at Iowa Methodist. Look for drop off boxes at the front desk and Fireside Lounge. A list of suggested items will be posted on the collection boxes. For more information, please contact Kirsten LaBlanc at 491-0907 or Rachel Corron at 313-6645.
►  EAGLES next event will be on August 19, meeting at church at 8:00 am for a day trip to Fairfield to tour the Arts and Convention Center, Maharishi Vedic City (with a unique observatory including 10 masonry sundials displaying movements of the sun, planets and stars), an abbreviated tour of Creative Edge (floor art), abbreviated tour of an organic dairy farm, and a stop at the famous American Gothic House used in Grant Wood's painting, "American Gothic".  Call or e-mail Marge Sexton Randels if you are able to attend, 967-2676 or MLSEXTON36@aol.com
►  Photography will meet on August 22, 10:00 am in Neumann.   Members are urged to continue to take pictures of items in nature, architecture, or the church that remind you of alphabet letters or numerals as  this might be used as a theme for December's Artist of the Month in Weertz. The theme for the August meeting is "Summer shots."

►  Calling all ICE CREAM makers!!! Would you be willing to make a batch or two or three of homemade ice cream for an "Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social" at St. John's on August 20th? Or maybe you would rather donate a few dozen homemade cookies or bars? If so, please email/call Megan Clausen (meganc@stjohnsdsm.org OR 243.7691). ►  ASAP needs your help. Can you lend a hand at Summer Arts Camp? Come join us for one week of fun and lively hands-on arts experiences for kids in the 50314 neighborhood on Des Moines' near-north side. Here are the details:  Summer Arts Camp takes place in Evelyn K. Davis Park the week of August 9-13 (Monday through Friday).  Walkup registration and studio set-up are from 12:30 to 1:00 Studio 1 is 1:00 to 1:50 Studio 2 is 2:00 to 2:50.  There is no culminating event, as studio activities produce work that can be taken home each day.  We need studio assistants who work side by side with the kids under the instruction of the teaching artists, as well as administrative help and floaters to assist me with registration, making signage and nametags, and other duties.  Please contact Michelle Bolton King (michelle@asap-dsm.org; 515-770-3380, www.asap-dsm.org) if you can volunteer for all or part of the week of August 9. We would love to have your help!

It's Okay to Be Human

►  We're brought up to be strong, self-sufficient, independent people. We tend to think that if we ask for help, it is a sign of weakness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden, stuffed deep inside. However, that's not God's plan. Galatians 6:2 says "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." God wants us to care for others--and allow others to care for us in our time of need. If you're sad or struggling inside, don't suffer alone. Ask for help. We have a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care, encourage, pray, and help you through a tough time. Men are matched with men, and women with women. (It's completely confidential too!) To find out more about Stephen Ministry for you or someone you know, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders, Pastor Speirs, Linda Rieck or Karen Zaabel.

Jacque's interest in photography began early in her life and gained momentum as her children's lives developed. As a result of that interest, she has taken photography classes in college and post-college. She enjoys taking
photos of people, scenery and architecture. Her children tease her about having "her camera attached to her hip."
