Did You Know?

Last week St. John's launched a brand new website.  Located at www.stjohnsdsm.org this new website offers some features not found on the old version.  We can create forms to gather volunteers, you can now directly email any staff member through the website, on the back end this new platform is easier to update, and is less expensive.  There are quite a few more features "under the hood" that we may launch in the future.  I would like to extend a special Thank You to Amber Jackson-Elwer for helping design our new banner.  Take a look at the new site and let me know what you think.  Peace, Scott

►  Photography will NOT meet in July. Continue to take pictures of items in nature, architecture, or the church that remind you of alphabet letters or numerals as  this might be used as a theme for December's Artist of the Month in Weertz. The next meeting is Sunday, August 22.  "Summer shots" is the theme for August.
►  Gardening group will meet on Wednesday, August 4, beginning at 6:00 pm at the home of Dennis and Karen Zaabel, 1102 S. 50th Place in West Des Moines. Dennis enjoys adding something new and unique to his garden and he has an interesting surprise for this garden tour.
►  EAGLES next event will be on August 19, meeting at church at 8:00 am for a day trip to Fairfield to tour the Arts and Convention Center, Maharishi Vedic City (with a unique observatory including 10 masonry sundials displaying movements of the sun, planets and stars), an abbreviated tour of Creative Edge (floor art), abbreviated tour of an organic dairy farm, and a stop at the famous American Gothic House used in Grant Wood's painting, "American Gothic." Call or e-mail Marge Sexton Randels if you are able to attend, 967-2676 or MLSEXTON36@aol.com
►  St. John's Moms are collecting DVD's, games, books, craft items, scrapbooking supplies, etc. -  items that would help occupy the hours of some very long days for expectant moms on bed rest  at Iowa Methodist. Look for drop off boxes at the front desk and Fireside Lounge. A list of suggested items will be posted on the collection boxes. For more information, please contact Kirsten LaBlanc at 491-0907 or Rachel Corron at 313-6645.

Creating a Culture of Thanksgiving at
St. John's...

"There are few things that will build up a congregation more than having a culture of thanksgiving."  (Ask, Thank, Tell, p. 104)  How true!!  While we grow in a life of thanksgiving to God for all that God has given us in Christ and continues to entrust to us for the sake of the world, let's also grow in thanking one another!  Is there someone at St. John's whom you would like to thank for sharing their particular talents with you or the entire congregation?  Is there someone who has made you feel particularly welcome and valued?  Please pick up a no-cost card & envelope from the "thank you basket" at the Welcome Center and use it to jot a note of thanks this week!  (And if you need help with a name and/or address, don't hesitate to ask one of the pastors or other staff for assistance!)  Thank you!!

►  ASAP needs your help. Can you lend a hand at Summer Arts Camp? Come join us for one week of fun and lively hands-on arts experiences for kids in the 50314 neighborhood on Des Moines' near-north side. Here are the details:  Summer Arts Camp takes place in Evelyn K. Davis Park the week of August 9-13 (Monday through Friday).  Walkup registration and studio set-up are from 12:30 to 1:00 Studio 1 is 1:00 to 1:50 Studio 2 is 2:00 to 2:50.  There is no culminating event, as studio activities produce work that can be taken home each day.  We need studio assistants who work side by side with the kids under the instruction of the teaching artists, as well as administrative help and floaters to assist me with registration, making signage and nametags, and other duties.  Please contact Michelle Bolton King (michelle@asap-dsm.org; 515-770-3380, www.asap-dsm.org) if you can volunteer for all or part of the week of August 9. We would love to have your help!

What Do
Stephen Ministers Do?

►  Stephen Ministers are members of St. Johns Lutheran Church who have gone through 50 hours of training to provide confidential one-to-one Christian care to people who are facing a crisis or simply going through a difficult time. Your Stephen Minister will meet with you once a week for around an hour to listen to you, care for you, pray with and for you, and provide emotional and spiritual encouragement. Men are matched with male Stephen Ministers; women are matched with female Stephen Ministers. To find out more about how you or someone you know could be matched with a Stephen Minister, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders: Pastor Speirs, Linda Rieck or Karen Zaabel.

St. John's Own -
A Man of Many Talents!

When away from his job as St. John's maintenance supervisor, Les spends time with his camera capturing the beauty of nature, including landscapes, plants, flowers, birds and animals. You will also see unique
architectural elements in some of his favorite photos, along with the smiles of his "four fabulous and very
photogenic grandchildren."
