Stephen Ministry

What Do Stephen Ministers Do?

►  Stephen Ministers are members of St. John's Lutheran Church who have gone through 50 hours of training to provide confidential one-to-one Christian care to people who are facing a crisis or simply going through a difficult time. Your Stephen Minister will meet with you once a week for around an hour to listen to you, care for you, pray with and for you, and provide emotional and spiritual encouragement. Men are matched with male Stephen Ministers; women are matched with female Stephen Ministers. To find out more about how you or someone you know could be matched with a Stephen Minister, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders: Pastor Speirs, Linda Rieck or Karen Zaabel.

Swahili
Unasema Kiswahili?

(Do you understand Swahili?)

►  You will if you attend our Intro to Swahili class on Wednesday evenings in June!!  Beginning June 2 at 7:00 pm, Julie Lowe & Rachel Almlie (sisters who have lived in East Africa) will offer basic traveler's Swahili for people of all ages. If you are thinking about visiting our Companion Parish in Tanzania, if you would like to offer a more gracious welcome to Swahili speakers in our community and/or visitors from Africa, or if you just like learning languages we encourage you to attend!  All are welcome!  If possible, call/e-mail the church office before June 2nd if you plan to participate so that we have enough resources for everyone. Asante! (Thank you!)

►  Needed: Persons to do laying on of hands at the healing services the second Sunday of each month. We use persons at each service; 1 on Saturday evening, and 2 at each of the Sunday services. Training is provided. Call Jean McKinney or the front desk, 243-7691, and indicate your preferred service. Come and share God's grace.
►  A Special Communion Service for shut-ins is scheduled for June 6 at 3:00 and we need your help. With the elevator out of service, able-bodied volunteers are needed to help with people in wheelchairs-maneuvering up and down the ramp will require some strength to control the chair. People are needed from 2:30-5:00 pm. The people attending the service are our legacy members of St. John's-our living history. Please share some of your time and let them know their presence is valued. Call Jean McKinney or the front desk to sign-up to volunteer. Thank you!

Artist of the Month

Janet Heinicke
Retired Professor Emeritus of Art at Grand View University

"Making something", watching a shape, a color, a texture emerge from the "nothing" of a piece of paper is deeply satisfying. My spirit sings when I make something! So...yes...making art is an extension of life for me. . .without it, I would be (and am) less whole, less human."
