FTC Suggests Strict Limits on Children's Food Marketing

The Federal Trade Commission has released new guidelines aimed at strictly limiting the marketing of certain foods to children. Under the proposal, food advertised to children would have to contain certain healthy ingredients, including fresh fruits and vegetables, and not have large amounts of sugar, saturated fat, transfat and salt. The guidelines would target nearly all types of marketing tools, including the use of cartoon characters, advertising mediums, product placement and digital media applications. Even though the proposed guidelines are voluntary, it is expected that food companies will face pressure to adopt them.

Interested parties will have will have until June 13, 2011 to comment. MWFPA will submit comments pointing out that the standards are so strict they would virtually ban the advertising of many familiar products including vegetable soup, peanut butter and most breakfast cereals.  Food manufacturers have already taken significant steps to improve recipes and change the way it advertises to children.

MN Senate Committee Passes Tort Reform Measures

A series of tort reform measures passed the MN Judiciary Committee last week and are headed to the Senate floor. The legislation would revise class-action lawsuit rules, lower prejudgment interest rates, shorten Minnesota's statute of limitations and extend the reach of conciliation courts.

MWFPA supports tort reform efforts in MN recognizing the need to bring MN's liability laws in line with other states and ensure a more stable business climate.
