MWFPA Comments on USDA School Lunch Rules

In response to proposed new school lunch standards limiting the serving of vegetables such as potatoes, green peas, sweet corn and lima beans, MWFPA submitted comments to the United States Department of Agriculture recommending changes.

MWFPA opposes the limits and believes the proposed standards will take away many of the popular vegetables that children like.  This may actually work against the purpose of the standards which is to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in a child's diet. MWFPA continues to work with the American Fruit and Vegetable Processors and Growers Coalition and other organizations seeking modifications to the proposed rule.

MWFPA Meets With Federal Lawmakers

MWFPA was in the nation's capital this week meeting with key members of the congressional delegations from IllinoisCapitol, Minnesota and Wisconsin. MWFPA and representatives from General Mills, Lakeside Foods, Seneca Foods, Red Gold, AcMoody Farms, Nestle, CFA and AFFI along with representatives of the American Fruit and Vegetable Processors and Growers Coalition discussed federal legislative priorities for 2011: school food program policy and the 2012 farm bill.

Among the meetings on Capitol Hill were productive sessions with members of the House and Senate agricultural committees. The coaltion reported on the success of the farm flex pilot program adopted in the 2010 Farm Bill and urged committee members to expand the program. In addition, opposition to the USDA draft rule reducing the amount of potatoes, starchy vegetables, and tomato products allowed in school lunch and snack programs was discussed.

WI Governor Modifies Phosphorus Law Proposal

WI Gov. Scott Walker wants to delay putting the state's new phosphorus pollution limits into effect rather than scaling them back. Walker's original budget proposal called for scaling back the standards so they were no more restrictive than other states' limits. He wants to modify the plan to delay the standards for two years rather than bringing them in line with other states.

Last year WI adopted sweeping phosphorus regulations creating new restrictions on a wide range of potential phosphorus sources, including large-scale wastewater producers. MWFPA and other stakeholders argued the rules were too costly, added uncertainty to the regulatory process and would have a negligible impact on phosphorus levels in Wisconsin's waters.
