STATE POLICY
WI Plastics Panel Mulls Policy Options

The WI state legislature's special committee on single-use plastics met on Oct 19 to look at policy options affecting the production, use, and disposal of plastic packaging.

Committee staff was directed to prepare materials for further consideration regarding recycled content, labeling and package design requirements.  Chairman Black (D-Madison) suggested that, except for selected materials, such as agricultural plastics, the committee not pursue the concept of EPR.

MWFPA continues to monitor any signs of proposed legislation resulting from the work of the committee.  The committee will meet again on Nov. 16 and hopes to complete its work at a meeting scheduled for Dec. 16.

Nanotech Committee Looks To WI Clearinghouse

At its Oct. 26 meeting, the WI Special Committee on Nanotechnology discussed in earnest how to develop a clearinghouse that would facilitate the development and commercialization of nanotechnology.

Such an entity might serve as a source of nanotechnology

information, providing resources on educational and research initiatives, compliance with applicable regulations, understanding of potential environmental, health and safety issues and relevant standards and practices to protect human health and the

environment.

The committee also discussed the need to learn what nanomaterials are in use in WI, but did not arrive at a consensus on how to do it. MWFPA continues to monitor the activities of this committee as the application of nanotechnology is important to the food manufacturing industry.
