FEDERAL POLICY
BPA Amendment Likely Part of Food Safety Bill
Sen. Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA) amendment that would restrict the use of BPA will likely be brought to the floor if the food safety bill is considered after the mid-term elections.

The Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510), which has been stalled in the Senate for over a year, may be one of the first bills up for consideration in November when Congress reconvenes. It must compete however with a number of high profile issues, including a defense authorization bill and whether to extend tax cuts.

MWFPA remains opposed to a legislative BPA ban and groups such as the Grocery Manufacturers Association have threatened to pull their support for the bill should Feinstein's amendment be included in the final package.

MWFPA Assures MN Crop Safety

The MWFPA issued a statement Oct. 11 assuring a MN ag official that food processors have safeguards in place against the utilization of crops potentially contaminated by recent flooding.

MWFPA outlined the procedures processors have in place to ensure that fruits and vegetables processed in MN are safe for public consumption. The heavy rain that fell across much of southern Minnesota on September 22nd and 23rd, left large areas of Minnesota farm fields submerged and created unwarranted concern about the possible contamination of processing crops.

MWFPA Wants WI Wind Siting Rule Reconsidered

MWFPA and a coalition consisting of the WI Potato and Vegetable Growers Assoc., the WI Air Applicators Assoc., the Crop Production Assoc. and horticulturists from the University of Wisconsin, voiced their concern over proposed wind energy facility siting rules at a legislative hearing on Oct. 13.

The rules, developed by the WI Public Service Commission (PSC), would allow large-scale wind energy plants to be sited in areas of intense vegetable production. This could prevent farms from using airplanes to treat their crops.

Sen. Jeff Plale (D-South Milwaukee), chair of the committee which heard the testimony, said he wants to see the rules sent back to the PSC for more work. If the Legislature does not send the rules back, they will become law.

MWFPA President Nick George said sending the rules back would help the PSC put in place a compensation system developed by stakeholders for losses incurred due to the siting of a wind facility.
