FEDERAL POLICY

Federal Food Safety Bill Still Stalled
The Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) remains stalled in the U.S. Senate, despite procedural moves to fast track the legislation by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) delayed passage of the bill by demanding its entire $1.4 billion cost over five years be paid for with corresponding cuts in spending.  He also has concerns over provisions in the measure he feels might prove to be burdensome for agribusiness.

Congress has recessed until Nov. 15 when it is expected that efforts to pass this legislation will renew.  MWFPA continues to monitor the situation as California Sen. Dianne Feinstein has indicated her desire to propose an amendment to the bill restricting the use of BPA.

STATE POLICY
WI Nanotech Committee Continues Hearings
The WI special committee on nanotechnology met on Sept. 30 and discussed the creation of a nanotechnology registry in addition to methods to assist nanotechnology businesses while monitoring the use, manufacture and disposal of nanomaterials.

A number of committee members expressed concern over nano-silver and the public's lack of knowledge regarding its use. Nano-silver is used to kill harmful bacteria in food storage containers, shoe liners, washing machines and even bandages.

The committee is scheduled to meet next on Oct. 26 and then again on Dec. 7. Any recommendations developed by the committee could be introduced as a bill in the next legislative session set to begin in January 2011.

In Memoriam:  Marvin Gerdes
It was with much sadness that MWFPA learned of the passing on September 28 of Marv Gerdes. Marv was with Associate Member FMC Ag Products and dealt primarily with FMC cookers and some other FMC products. He was with FMC for many years and was well known and respected in the industry. Even though he was retired he always attended canning and freezing functions such as the IFT/FPSA show in Chicago this past July and the MWFPA convention in Rochester, MN.

The family wishes that memorials be made in Marvin's name to the Beaver Dam Senior Center -- Building Fund, 114 E. Third St., Beaver Dam, WI, 53916, or to the UW Foundation, Gerdes Family Fund, P.O. Box 78807, Milwaukee, WI.
