| Businesses Stand Their Ground on BPA Ban | | The food industry and major business groups, including the US Chamber of Commerce, threatened to withdraw support for S. 510, the food safety bill currently before Congress, due to their opposition to a proposed amendment banning BPA. Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-CA., offered the amendment.
On April 30th, MWFPA sent letters to the U.S. Senators from Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin urging them to oppose any amendment to the bill that would ban BPA. MWFPA members are encouraged to contact their Senators and express opposition to any such amendment.

Kelliher will face two primary challengers in the Aug. 10 DFL primary: former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton and former House minority leader Matt Entenza.

| MWFPA Addresses BPA Before IL Legislative Committee | |
On May 3rd MWFPA President Nick George appeared before the Illinois State Senate Subcommittee on Children's Environmental Health Issues in opposition to SB 3750 -- the BPA products ban. The MWFPA position paper on the ban can be viewed here.
The legislation would ban BPA in baby bottles, sippy cups, infant formula and other various containers like sports bottles and thermoses. The bill also requires labeling of all other containers like canned food and beverages if they have a BPA lining. The FDA has consistently found BPA to be safe and has taken no action to ban, restrict or even label these products.
The Illinois Senate is scheduled to adjourn on May 7th.
