Richmond Drainage Improvements: Eastside/Audley Intersections Open This Week |
Richmond Construction
Work on the Richmond Avenue Storm Drainage Improvements Project went as expected this week allowing traffic control to shift and the western portion of the project to be opened up just west of Wakeforest.
Crews poured concrete Monday morning as planned between the west side of Wakeforest and the east side of Audley allowing them to open this section to traffic toward the end of the week.
Work over the coming month will shift east to complete the remaining storm sewer installation between Wakeforest and Virginia as well as the junction boxes at Kirby and Wakeforest. During this period, the western segment of the project area from Wakeforest to Buffalo Speedway will be unobstructed. Both the Audley intersection and the Eastside intersection will be restored to full access.
The Eastside lateral work south of Richmond and north of Norfolk will be poured later today which will allow traffic to return to normal on this section by the end of the weekend. At that point, crews will shift south to the cul-de-sac to complete the storm installation. Concurrent water line work and pavement restoration on Norfolk will continue next week as well.
Work on Eastside north of Richmond is making significant progress as well. Storm installation is nearly complete between Elbert and Richmond. It is expected that this area will be completed toward the end of August at which point lateral storm sewer installation activities will move to Audley north of Richmond.
During all lateral work on Eastside and Audley, there will be just enough room for two-way traffic to pass. Please be sure to stay to the right as you pass the construction area to allow motorists traveling opposite you to proceed. Also be aware that no on-street parking will be permitted through the construction zone. Flagmen will assist in moving motorists safely through the construction area in these confined spaces.
The Richmond Drainage Improvement Project between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway is one of two remaining systems still needing upgrades that feeds into the recently updated Kirby storm system and moves water south to Braes Bayou. The project will entail the installation of a new 6-foot storm drain to provide additional underground capacity and upgraded lateral systems and inlets on Eastside and Audley all aimed at addressing the serious flooding issues this stretch of Richmond is known to experience.
Please be on the lookout for further updates as work progresses. For more information on Upper Kirby construction projects and for issues and concerns as construction progresses, contact Travis Younkin at 713.524.8000 or email travis@upperkirby.org.
