Richmond Drainage Improvements: Rains Temporarily Slow Progress |
Richmond Construction
Work on the Richmond Drainage Improvements Project stalled this week due to constant rain. Most activity has been pushed back to next week when crews will hope to make up for lost time.
That said, the project overall is moving at a very fast pace. 6'X6' storm sewer installation is complete from Kirby to approximately 130 linear feet west of Audley save for junction boxes that still remain to be installed at the Kirby and Wakeforest intersections and a short run of storm sewer just east of Wakeforest that will be installed with the Wakeforest junction box.
Next week crews will work on 9'X4' boxes that will extend approximately 230 feet further west to accommodate the flows from Audley and then transfer back to 6'X6' for the remaining length of the project to Buffalo Speedway. There should be no significant shift in traffic control or movement next week.
Lateral work south of Richmond on Eastside has been completed from Richmond approximately half way to the cul-de-sac at 59. This area has been framed for concrete and, weather permitting, will be poured on Tuesday of next week. Allowing three days for the concrete to cure, the traffic control should be ready to be moved and the new pavement opened up by Friday of next week. At that point, they will shift south with traffic control to continue the drainage installation to the cul-de-sac.
Storm installation has been completed on Norfolk as well south of Richmond tying into the Eastside system. Water line work still remains here and should begin next week. Once complete this short stretch of roadway will be framed for concrete and poured shortly after.
Work has begun north of Richmond on Eastside as well. Crews have begun pulling up the pavement in preparation for the installation of a 36" storm sewer lateral that will extend north from Richmond approximately to Elbert. This activity should continue over the coming week.
The Eastside intersection will continue to be unavailable for north/south through traffic and motorists on Eastside north and southbound will continue to be forced to turn right or left at Richmond. Left turn movements from Richmond onto Eastside will continue to be unavailable next week as well. Crews could be prepared over the next week or two to move traffic control to the north side of Richmond to begin storm sewer installation on Eastside to Elbert.
Lateral line work will also take place on Audley north of Richmond as this project progresses. During all lateral work on Eastside and Audley, there will be just enough room for two-way traffic to pass. Please be sure to stay to the right as you pass the construction area to allow motorists traveling opposite you to proceed. Also be aware that no on-street parking will be permitted through the construction zone. Flagmen will assist in moving motorists safely through the construction area in these confined spaces.
The Richmond Drainage Improvement Project between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway is one of two remaining systems still needing upgrades that feeds into the recently updated Kirby storm system and moves water south to Braes Bayou. The project will entail the installation of a new 6-foot storm drain to provide additional underground capacity and upgraded lateral systems and inlets on Eastside and Audley all aimed at addressing the serious flooding issues this stretch of Richmond is known to experience.
Please be on the lookout for further updates as work progresses. For more information on Upper Kirby construction projects and for issues and concerns as construction progresses, contact Travis Younkin at 713.524.8000 or email travis@upperkirby.org.
