Kirby Drive construction between Richmond and US 59 is now just days away from substantial completion.

This week workers   completed the curb and base of the center median. They will add hardscape material and complete landscaping Monday or Tuesday of next week leaving the project substantially complete. While there are still some miscellaneous touches that will be completed after the Thanksgiving holiday (benches and trash can installation etc.), the roadway is now just days away from full, unobstructed access to all lanes, sidewalks and driveways.

The District would like to thank the local businesses and property owners along Kirby Drive as well as the motorists who rely on this stretch of roadway for their patience and understanding during construction. It has been a grave inconvenience, but one that has led to a truly amazing city street.  

Buffalo Speedway Construction  As was the case last week, Buffalo Speedway work will continue  with storm sewer installation and roadway paving activities.

This past week, crews made significant progress on storm sewer installation continuing to progress northward with the new inline detention installation. Roadway demolition has also begun in anticipation of new pavement installation.

Construction began mid-February 2011 and is currently on pace to be completed late February/early March 2012 putting total construction time at just over one calendar year despite a significant delay by utility providers in transferring services underground and setting new terminal poles outside of the project area. To date, overhead utilities have been relocated underground, new water line installation is complete and storm sewer improvements have begun leaving only paving and streetscape amenities to be completed over the next several months.

Motorists should expect paving activity in November to focus on the east side of the roadway causing traffic control to remain in its current condition for the remainder of the month. Once paved, traffic barriers will be moved to the west side of the roadway to finish the pavement.

Major US 59 Lane Closures This Weekend
 

TxDot work will begin this weekend in the Upper Kirby area. Below is the notice from TxDot regarding the details of the project. 

 

Spring Equipment, which is under contract with TxDOT, has scheduled the following major lane closures for the weekends of 11.18.11 thru 11.21.11 and 12.09.11 thru 12.12.11. The closures on the first weekend will facilitate the replacement of the sealed expansion joints within the outside shoulder and three and one half outside lanes for the Southbound US 59 S. Overpass @ Kirby.  

 

The sealed expansion joints within the inside shoulder and the two and one half inside lanes for the Southbound US 59 S. Overpass at Kirby will be replaced the second weekend. Please note that only two Southwest Freeway Southbound Main Lanes at Kirby will remain open each weekend. The auxiliary lane between the Southbound Shepherd/Greenbriar Entrance Ramp and the Buffalo Speedway Exit Ramp will also remain open the second weekend.

 

US 59 S. Southbound mainlanes between Montrose and Kirby: Multiple (4) Right, (Outside), Main Lanes & the Outside Shoulder will be closed between 9:00 PM on Friday, 11.18.11 and 5:00 AM on Monday, 11.21.11. (Only 2 Main Lanes will remain open).

 

US 59 S. Southbound mainlanes Exit to Shepherd/Greenbriar: One Right, (Outside), Lane closed between 9:00 PM on Friday, 11.18.11 and 5:00 AM on Monday, 11.21.11.

  

US 59 S. Southbound Frtg Rd Entrance Ramp from Shepherd/Greenbriar: Total Closure, Total Closure between 9:00 PM on Friday, 11.18.11 and 5:00 AM on Monday, 11.21.11.

Detour: US 59 S S/B Frtg Rd to Kirby Entrance Ramp to US 59S S/B Mainlanes

 

US 59S. Northbound Frtg Rd U-Turn to US 59S S/B Frtg Rd: Total Closure between 9:00 PM on Friday, 11.18.11 and 5:00 AM on Monday, 11.21.11.

Detour: U-Turn via the signalized intersection.  

 

US 59S. Southbound Frtg Rd U-Turn to US 59S N/B Frtg Rd: Total Closure between 9:00 PM on Friday, 11.18.11 and 5:00 AM on Monday, 11.21.11.

Detour: U-Turn via the signalized intersection.        

 

US 59 S. Southbound Mainlanes between Montrose and Kirby: Three (3) Left, (Inside), Main Lanes & the Inside Shoulder will be closed between 9:00 PM on Friday, 12.09.11 and 5:00 AM on Monday, 12.12.11. (Only 2 Main Lanes and the auxilary lane between the S/B Shepherd Greenbriar Entrance Ramp and the Buffalo Speedway Exit Ramp will remain open the second weekend.)

 

US 59S. Northbound Frtg Rd U-Turn to US 59S S/B Frtg Rd: Total Closure between 9:00 PM on Friday, 12.09.11 and 5:00 AM on Monday, 12.12.11.

Detour: U-Turn via the signalized intersection.  

 

US 59S. Southbound Frtg Rd U-Turn to US 59S N/B Frtg Rd: Total Closure between 9:00 PM on Friday, 12.09.11 and 5:00 AM on Monday, 12.12.11.

Detour: U-Turn via the signalized intersection.        

Advance Signing in the form of Changeable Message Signs will placed on Friday, 11.11.11. They will be reset for the second weekend on Friday, 12.02.11.

 

The Texans do not have a home game for either weekend.
