Kirby Drive Richmond to 59 Important Intersection Work Ahead |
Kirby Drive edges closer to completion this week with brand new pavement running from curb-to-curb the length of the project and Buffalo Speedway water line activity is continuing to progress nicely.
Kirby Drive Construction The main lanes of Kirby Drive are now paved and traffic control has shifted to the center of the street where the raised median will be constructed. Work on Kirby from this point to completion entails only intersection and median construction and hardscape and landscaping installation.
Kirby intersections with work still to be completed include: US 59, Algerian Way and Richmond Avenue. Over the weekend the last remaining piece at Kirby and US 59 is scheduled to begin. Paving activity here will take place on the northbound frontage road (heading east on US 59). Motorists should expect the inside lanes on 59 heading towards Downtown to be closed this weekend crossing the Kirby intersection. Northbound motorists on Kirby should also expect to be squeezed down by one lane as they pass the frontage road and US 59 underpass. Next weekend will be the final piece of 59/Kirby intersection work as crews replace the curbside lane also on the northbound frontage road.
The remaining section of pavement connecting Algerian Way to Kirby will be completed next week also. Beginning Monday, crews will repave the Kirby approach on Algerian in halves. One way traffic onto Kirby will be maintained with flagmen to assist with movements as this work is completed. On Tuesday crews expect to complete the second half of this section and reopen to full access Wednesday next week.
Still to be removed and replaced is the Richmond/Kirby intersection. This is a complicated interchange and will impact traffic movement significantly. The intersection will be completed over the weekend to minimize this impact. The earliest this work would occur would be one week from today. Please stay posted for updates as the sequence and phasing of this intersection reconstruction is finalized.
While pavement is complete along the main lanes of Kirby, workers will still utilize the curbside lane on each side of the road to install landscaping and hardscape items over the next several weeks. Two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound will remain unobstructed on either side of the median installation zone down the center of the street as this work progresses.
Buffalo Speedway Construction Water line work is progressing nicely on Buffalo Speedway with storm sewer work following shortly behind. The next several weeks will be spent installing new water lines on the east side of the street. Expect traffic movements to remain the same during this phase of work.
Look for weekly updates as this project progresses.
