Upper Kirby Construction

Kirby Drive at US 59
Weekend Work to Impact Intersection
July Construction 1 Over the past week crews have continued to make progress on the east side of Kirby Drive between Richmond and US 59 and are now well underway with water line installation on Buffalo Speedway between US 59 and Bissonnet.

Kirby Drive Construction
Construction activity continues in the coming week along the east side of the road pushing traffic to the west. Five lanes will remain open from 59 to Richmond (two lanes north, two lanes south and a continuous left-turn lane).

Over the past week, crews have been focused on storm inlet installation and associated paving at the Portsmouth and Norfolk intersections as well as pavement preparation work along the length of the project area on the east side of Kirby Drive.

Work on the Portsmouth/Kirby storm inlet leads is now complete and access has been restored. Crews have moved on to Norfolk where they are underway and anticipate completing that section over the coming weekend. While this activity is going on, motorists with destinations on Norfolk east of Kirby can use Portsmouth to Park or Portsmouth to Revere to access those destinations.

Following immediately behind the Norfolk intersection will be the Algerian Way/Kirby crossing currently scheduled for early next week. During this phase vehicular access on and off Algerian from Kirby will be restricted. To minimize the impact of this closure, crews will be using a quick-dry concrete mix and working over night. Weather permitting, this closure should only be in effect for 24 hours. Motorists with Algerian Way destinations during that period will have to use Lomitas Street access off of the 59 feeder road just east of the Kirby/59 intersection.

Work at the 59/Kirby intersection will continue over the weekend impacting the northbound Kirby side of the feeder roads heading west and east. The southern most (or left) two lanes of the 59 feeder roads will be closed from late Friday night through Sunday and will reopen to full access for the work week next week. Traffic heading both directions will be pushed to the right to clear the intersection.

Buffalo Speedway Construction Water line installation along the east side of the roadway began this week and will continue next week. Storm sewer lines will be installed during this phase of the project as well and will impact traffic lanes in both directions. This work will take place overnight and will utilize flagmen to direct traffic. Paving preparation will follow shortly behind water line work. Traffic control will remain unchanged during this phase of the project.

Look for weekly updates as this project progresses.
