Kirby Drive - Richmond to 59 Norfolk Work Continues Next Week

Kirby Drive Construction
Work is scheduled to begin on several key components of the Kirby Drive reconstruction project next week as paving activity continues to move along on the west side of the roadway. Here are some things to look out for as you negotiate the construction zone:
US 59 Underpass Southbound Lanes to Close Weekend of July 22 through July 24-
Reconstruction of all southbound lanes under US 59 is scheduled to continue this weekend. Access southbound under the freeway will be prohibited over this period as crews work to remove and replace the pavement under 59 and between the north and south frontage roads. Crews will close the southbound lanes around 10 PM Friday night and re-open them around 5 AM Monday morning. With favorable conditions over the weekend, it is possible that these lanes can be opened back up as early as Sunday.
During this construction, southbound motorists on Kirby as well as westbound motorists on the 59 feeder looking to turn south onto Kirby will be detoured west along the feeder where they may U-Turn at Buffalo Speedway to resume heading south on Kirby.
One final phase of underpass work on the southbound lanes is scheduled for next weekend (July 29, 30 and 31), however, during that phase it will be possible to maintain one lane of southbound traffic under the freeway.
Storm Sewer Work to Continue on Norfolk East of Kirby- Crews have been working over the past week to place a new storm sewer lateral line on Norfolk east of Kirby that will address the serious drainage deficiency in that area. The new line runs from Kirby east to Revere where it turns north and runs all the way to Richmond Avenue.
Currently, two way traffic is being maintained on Norfolk with the use of flagmen and temporary surface material, however, once repaving begins, Norfolk will be restricted to one-way traffic heading west. Motorists will be able to exit Norfolk onto Kirby but will not be able to turn east down Norfolk from Kirby.
Northbound motorists looking to access destinations on Norfolk between Kirby and Revere may turn right onto Pourtsmouth and then right on either Park or Revere to access Norfolk destinations. Richmond can also be used to access Norfolk via either Park or Revere. Southbound motorists looking to access Norfolk destinations between Kirby and Revere should expect to turn left onto Richmond and use either Park or Revere to continue south to Norfolk.
Once paving begins, it is anticipated that two-way traffic can be restored in three to four days. Motorists and patrons should expect this activity to begin around mid-week next week.
Traffic movement will be maintained on Norfolk and Revere throughout this lateral line construction, however, it will likely be restricted to one-way movement westbound on Norfolk from Revere toward Kirby.
Buffalo Speedway Construction Upper Kirby contractors will remain demobilized next week as utility companies continue to work to relocate their services to the new underground facilities. It appears as though utility work could be complete by the end of July allowing roadway crews to begin paving activity in early August. Watch for further updates as this work progresses.
