April in the Upper Kirby District |
Safety Tips from Harris County Constable Patrol
|
Nearly ten years ago, the
businesses and residents of the Upper Kirby District were concerned
about the
increased criminal activity, as a result, the Upper Kirby District
businesses
and residential neighborhoods instituted a patrol program by Harris
County Precinct
One Deputy Constables under the supervision of Constable Jack Abercia.
Since
the beginning of this program, overall criminal activity In the District
has
decreased 30%, while the overall criminal activity In Houston has
decreased 23%
over the same period.
The businesses and residents who help to underwrite the
patrol have access by telephone to Precinct
One's central dispatch. They are reporting suspicious persons and
incidents to
the deputies and as a result, potential criminal incidents are being
thwarted.
As more residents participate in the patrol, the downward trend in crime
in our
neighborhood will continue.
April Safety Tips: How to Make Your
Home More Safe
Keep
shrubs trimmed: They
should not cover your windows. This
will eliminate hiding places for burglars.
Use
lighting at night: Illuminate
dark areas around the outside of your home. This
eliminates hiding places and lets you see if anyone is hiding as you
approach your house. Use
double-key dead-bolt locks if
you have glass within 40 inches of the lock. This
keeps anyone from breaking the glass and reaching inside to unlock the
door.
Install
auxiliary locking devices on windows: This
keeps anyone from raising the window even though they defeat the factory
lock.The
auxiliary devices should be easy to remove from the inside in case of a
fire. Remember, for emergencies, call 911 first and then the constable patrol. For more information on Harris County
Precinct 1 Constable Patrol, click here.
