Matching Gifts

Many companies match employee donations to charity, allowing you to double the impact of your contribution! Employer matching gifts may also be available if you are the spouse of an employee, a retired employee or the spouse, or widow or widower of a retired employee. Check with your employer, usually with the HR department, to get a matching gift form. Then, mail your matching gift form to the PTA at the following address and we will do all the paperwork:

Kudos for HSMSE
HSMSE was named a High Performing Reward School by the NY State Education Department. Reward schools have the highest achievement in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement based on demographics.
The New York Post has ranked HSMSE sixth in its annual ranking of high schools. In addition to our excellent test scores, the Post cites the strength of our faculty, broad academic program, research opportunities, CCNY partnership and athletics as reasons for our strong showing.

Go Dragons!
xcountry Fall sports are in full swing. Boys soccer, girls soccer, and cross country began practices in August. The boys soccer team played their first game on September 8, defeating George Washington High School 2-1. A nail biter, the game turned around in the second half when constant pressure from the Dragons produced two timely goals and the win.

Girls soccer is still welcoming new players. Interested students should contact Coach Zafonte. The Varsity and JV cross country teams are full, but freshmen who can pass the time trial (an 8-minute mile for boys, or 9-minute mile for girls) are welcome to join, and should contact Coach Henning. Students who are interested in trying out for the boys basketball and girls basketball teams in late October need to get parental consent and PSAL medical forms completed soon.

A New HSMSE Publication: Dr. Dragon

Dr. Dragon is a student-produced magazine that focuses on math, science, and engineering. The mission of this magazine is to give HSMSE students the opportunity to take the school's core subjects and explore subtopics that particularly interest them. Students on the magazine staff research and write about subjects of their choice. They are also involved with the production of the magazine, and learn about everything from design to fundraising and budgeting.

This is the club's second year. It was founded in 2011 by a group of freshmen who wanted to bring together their interests in English and math, science, and engineering. Staff members wrote about current events, history, technology, and applications of engineering and science to everyday life. The magazine's debut issue featured articles on topics including climate change, neutrinos, ancient Egyptian medicine, military drones, and fractals, as well as an interview with a Columbia University oceanography professor. The club will be publishing its second issue this school year.

Dragons Abroad

HSMSE students, faculty, and administrators traveled abroad this summer through fellowships from the Goethe Insitut/PASCH program, the American Association of Teachers of German, and the Korea Society. Some of the returning Dragons have shared their experiences below.

Last summer Alex Kiladze, Leah Cabrera and I were selected to attend the Goethe-Institut PASCH language program in Varenholz, Germany. We spent three weeks staying in a castle and met people from sixteen different countries throughout the world. Some of the closest friends we made came from Montenegro, Ukraine and Morocco. We had class in the mornings and in the afternoons we had various activities to choose from such as swimming in the nearby lake or visiting a few different nearby towns. On the weekends we visited bigger cities farther away. Since our only common language with most of the people was German, we were forced to speak it constantly. Our German skills greatly improved and we learned about cultures from all over the world.

South Korea is quite the beautiful country - covered by mountains, replete with spectacular vistas and brimming with exuberance. A small group of teachers and I had the privilege of touring the country this past summer for 16 days through a fellowship offered by the Korea Society in order to capture first-hand insights and relay that information back to the classroom. We spent time in Seoul, an international and sophisticated city teeming with high rises, energy and a population of 11 million people. Removed from the bustling urban centers, we experienced timeless tranquility of the Buddhist temples of Haeinsa and Seokguram Grotto and learned more about Confucianism by exploring historic Yangdong Village. Our tour included a visit to the DMZ, the most heavily fortified border in the world, where we were able to feel the tension exhibited by these two nations.

A major lesson learned on this trip is that despite a history of foreign incursions, Korea has maintained a unique identity and offers a bevy of cultural treasures. Their food can be described as earthy and fiery and no meal is complete without their staple Kimchi (spicy cabbage) or their popular and delicious Korean BBQ. After attending a tea ceremony, my group and I could easily agree that their green tea is bar none. Their underlining enthusiasm for sports was witnessed at a Seoul soccer match and at a baseball game as roaring crowds cheered on their teams. Their proclivity for K-pop, a musical genre consisting of electropop, is a phenomenon in East Asia. Their cultural innovation of a 3-line poetry called Sijo is inspiring. Their education system with a near 100% literacy rate, thanks to King Sejong and the invention of Hangul, and a H.S. completion rate of 97% is one of the best in the world.

I would love to have HSMSE students get the opportunity to visit South Korea! Fortunately, through the Korea Society's Project Bridge program, juniors and seniors can complete a highly competitive application and possibly get selected to go during their 2013 spring break. Please see me for more details.
