PTA Spring Fair
| |

Spring Fair by Fahmida Ferdousi The Spring Fair was a lot of fun. Attendance was up from last year and everyone left smiling. Hopefully, this means that people will be looking forward to next year's spring fair. This event gets "better and better each year," and I quote from random attendees. I feel like the strong communication between students and the PTA is what made it happen. As a person who sat down, listened and contributed to the meetings between the head of student government's spring fair committee and the PTA, the fresh, new ideas that we, as students, gave to the PTA really sparked different possibilities that the even PTA hadn't considered. In addition, the PTA also gave us new possibilities that we hadn't considered. Everything was spectacular! The food, games, and prizes also spiced up the ambience! Overall, the Spring Fair this year was a huge success and it wouldn't have been like that if it wasn't for the cooperation between the students and parents! Thank you for all of your hard work and let's continue the good work next year!

WISE Trip to see Suze Orman
| |
On April 15, 2011, Ms. Calderon, Mr. Cedano, nineteen HSMSE student attendees (all Seniors), and I went to see Suze Orman at the High School of Economics and Finance as a part of the Working in Support of Education (WISE) Financial Literacy Program. The seniors were Juliel Espinosa, Jonathan Moreno, Stephen Carter, Gulam Islam, Melissa Yee Giselle Pacheco, Michael Feffer, Albert Hohenstein, Ravin Arjoon, William Chaplin, Juby Varghese, Nazomi Watanabe, Melissa Nogues, Shaquasia Myrie, Valerie Garcia, Christian Geddes, Valerie Maldonado, Christopher Yates, and Andrew Brown. While there, Nazomi Watanabe and Stephen Carter were selected to receive $5000 scholarships from Suze Orman and McGraww Hill respectively and all student attendees will receive a check for $100, courtesy of Oprah Winfrey. The HSMSE scholarship winners (Nazomi and Stephen) are two of ten, chosen randomly from a pile of papers with names written, then and there, on the spot, in the filled-to-capacity auditorium. What great fortune that two of our eighteen were chosen from the several hundred, near one thousand, NYC students in attendance in that audience. Family Fund Appeal
|
As we all know, the Department of Education provides a limited amount of funding for our school and is further reducing our school's budget. In the past, thanks to the generous support of HSMSE families, the PTA has been able to help fund many student activities and after school clubs, subsidize or provide scholarships to students in need for school trips, fund teacher enrichment, support enrichment in our classrooms, help support sports teams, contribute to graduation and help enrich the HSMSE community.
If you have already donated to the PTA, thank you so much. If not, please consider doing so now. About 10% of families have donated thus far and we are $7000 short of our goal of $20,000.
The PTA asks each family to make a contribution of $300 (or whatever you are able to give) to the family fund. Our goal is to have every family contribute something. No amount is too small or too large. Families have donated from $10 to $2500.
So please, go to our website and click donate, mail in a check or drop off your donation during the PTA meeting this week. Our kids thank you in advance.
Thanks,
Caryn Elvove
