Next Year's Symposium is scheduled for January 12-13, 2012.

Three $1,000 scholarships were awarded at this year's Garden Center Symposium. The recipients were:

  • Sophia Hanson - Northeast Wisconsin Technical College
  • Jess Roethle - UW- Platteville

How Do You Define Local

Garden centers have long advocated purchasing "the right plant for the right place." The native plant movement wants to push this strategy to a higher level by familiarizing customers with plants indigenous to the local area.

But that's exactly where the issue gets a bit muddled. How do you define "local" and determine which plants fit the bill? And how do cultivars of natives (sometimes dubbed "nativars") fit into the equation?   Read On. . .

America In Bloom

America in Bloom (AIB) is launching a series of 10 free webinars to share AIB's story and encourage participation. Attendance is open to all interested parties. Presenters include past AIB judges and representatives from participating towns. Registered participants will have a chance to ask questions and can access the webinars from any location that has high-speed internet.

 

Each webinar will start at 2 p.m. EST and last for 60 minutes, which includes time for questions. A complete list of dates, detailed topic descriptions, and presenters is available on the America in Bloom website.

Proven Winners, Outdoor Living Extravaganza 

Proven Winners has scheduled four Outdoor Living Extravaganzas in spring 2011, including one in Milwaukee on April 8.

The day-long event (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) includes a catered luncheon and special gift bags. Attendees will learn from four experts about creative new ways to use color, the easiest ways to grow plant varieties, how to put together exceptional containers, and much more.
