Whole Foods North East Welcomes WineTime Bars

Wow! We're delighted to announce that Whole Foods Markets in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will have WineTime Bars on their shelves this month.

It is anticipated that all 23 Whole Foods locations in their North East region will carry both the Chocolate, Dates & Almonds and Chocolate Raspberry flavors. Our plan is to support the presence of WineTime Bars with as many demos as possible in as many stores as possible.

We know from our experience expanding store-by-store in southern California that it's essential for customers to both hear about the health benefits of WineTime Bars and sample their great taste. The winning combination!

We are really excited that Whole Foods has given us this opportunity as this superb chain is the ideal showcase for our bars.

Meanwhile, we recently added our 11th and 12th Whole Foods locations in southern California-the markets in Venice and Redondo Beach. And we have been given the go-ahead to expand into all of the stores in the Whole Foods Southern Pacific region---that's all 44 stores in southern California, Arizona, southern Nevada and Hawaii.


Ralphs Wine Section Is the Place To Be

If you're in southern California take a look in the wine section of Ralphs Fresh Fare stores and chances are you'll come face-to-face with a five foot tall display rack of WineTime Bars.

Both flavors are in most of the upmarket Fresh Fare premises and are being supported with regular product demos and also through participation in grand store re-openings. Initial feedback has been really positive. We've seen customers grabbing a hand full of bars!


World Class Hotels Say "It's WineTime"

Two members of the world-famous Rosewood Hotels and Resorts group have recently joined the WineTime family! Making bars available to their guests are the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park, California.

An intimate vacation retreat and New Mexico's most lauded hotel, Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi is a Mobil 4-star, 58-room boutique hotel located in the historic downtown of Santa Fe.

On the west coast and nestled amid 16 pristine acres in Silicon Valley, Rosewood Sand Hill melds the rich heritage of relaxed California Ranch architecture with fragrant gardens and stunning Bay Area views.

Back east in the heart of downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, the Charlotte Marriott City Center hotel boasts a $10 million renovation and WineTime Bars.


Shaking Up the Bar Market

In an article headlined "Nutrition Bars: Raising the Bar" Nutritional Outlook magazine wrote about "a handful of ingredients that could shake up the future bar market."

Number one on the list: resveratrol.

Author article Robby Gardner wrote "This polyphenol antioxidant from wine grapes needs no lengthy consumer introduction. Consumers already hold positive associations between wine consumption, antioxidants, and the Mediterranean Diet, making incorporating resveratrol in a food product that much easier. One need only look at the endurance of the WineTime Bar (the first of its kind) to understand that there is an appeal for wine's nutrients outside of the bottle.

"Resveratrol research continues to grow-ClinicalTrials.gov indicates 35 resveratrol studies are either ongoing or recently completed-and what is currently understood about resveratrol is positive."

Resveratrol and Chocolate-A 'Good For the Mind' Combo

Red wine and chocolate are good for the mind, according to new research.

Polyphenols - plant chemicals abundant in both dark chocolate and wines - widen blood vessels, speeding the supply of blood and providing a rush of oxygen and sugars. Result: it becomes easier and quicker to make complex calculations. It is thought that polyphenols are more effective in combination than alone.

In other words, having some chocolate with your red wine could be better for you than just having a drink alone, say researchers at Northumbria University in the UK. Or-wait a minute-maybe a WineTime Bar instead is the ideal recipe, we say.

In the study, healthy adults were set a series of mental arithmetic tests after taking resveratrol. Scans showed a marked increase in blood flow to their brains.

In a second study at the same university volunteers were put through similar arithmetic tests but instead of resveratrol were given a chocolate drink bursting with a variety of different polyphenols. Not only did they do the sums more accurately after drinking the hot chocolate, they also did them more quickly.

Resveratrol May Reverse Cognitive Decline in Diabetics

Resveratrol may help reverse some of the symptoms of cognitive decline in diabetics.

In a study published in the American Journal of Physiology scientists from Louisiana State University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center reported that diabetic rats that consumed resveratrol experienced a restoration in brain function.

The risk of stroke and other brain disorders is higher in diabetics. Resveratrol is known to act as an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant which are associated with better circulation and a lower risk of cognitive decline, says the report.

In the study researchers separated the rats into four groups. They induced diabetes in two of the groups, one of which received daily doses of resveratrol. To serve as a point of comparison, the other two groups remained healthy, one of which received resveratrol.

After several weeks of testing the circulation in the rats, before and after introducing resveratrol, the brains were harvested and examined. Brain tissue in diabetic rats treated with resveratrol showed that some of the brain damage associated with diabetes actually reversed.

"We speculate that resveratrol may be a potential therapeutic treatment for the prevention of cerebrovascular dysfunction during diabetes," the study states, noting that resveratrol appears to relax the arteries in the brain. In the case of rats with diabetes, without the resveratrol, blood vessels were comparatively more restricted.

Also, oxygen levels normalized in the diabetes-afflicted rats which consumed resveratrol, bolstering the assertion that the red-wine compound works as both an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

If Fat Mice Can Live Longer...

Scientists trying to create a drug that mimics resveratrol have been able to substantially extend the average life span of obese mice.

The drug, SRT-1720, protects the mice from the usual diseases of obesity by reducing the amount of fat in the liver and increasing sensitivity to insulin. These and other positive health effects enable the obese mice to live 44 percent longer, on average, than obese mice that did not receive the drug, according to a team of researchers at the National Institute on Aging.

Drugs closely related to SRT-1720 are now undergoing clinical trials in humans. But it's going to be a long time before these pharmaceutical compounds could be ready to market. And, we say that while the research is extremely encouraging the drugs will never be able to replace the taste of WineTime Bars!

The findings "demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of designing novel molecules that are safe and effective in promoting longevity and preventing multiple age-related diseases in mammals," the researchers write in the journal Scientific Reports. Their conclusion supports claims that had been thrown in doubt by an earlier study that was critical of SRT-1720.
