Foodie Highlights summer 2010
| The onset of summer brought busy days spent at Sweeney's in Yaletown where we photographed a number of their quaint dishes such as this rockn' meatball sandwich, nicely paired with one of the many selections of local brews, and the decadent house made brownies, served up exclusively with Saltspring Coffee. On the foodie newsstands, EAT magazine delivers this smart piece on underground dining by food lovin' writer Sandra McKenzie. We photographed an artfully presented nicoise salad, all while keeping the Chef and location in secrecy. A BBQ shoot with Chef Brian Fowke of Kitsilano Daily Kitchen for the Georgia Straight, and then back to the studio shooting and food styling a variety of food concepts such as a pasta sauce theme for Kensington Mall. Finally a moveable feast with the Foodie Tour along Granville Street, hitting up a number of hotspots, including Twisted Fork, The Refinery, The Edge, Shuraku and finally stopping here at The Granville Room to refresh with a "Mr. Pink" Martini.

The Foodie Files
|
Welcome to this issue of the Foodie Files, a monthly newsletter dedicated to sharing a passion and expertise in food and beverage photography, all delivered with tasty images, updates and anecdotes from Foodie Photography's epicurean endeavors. |
Food Styling Tips, Tricks & Techniques
| It's ice cream season! This tricky treat is a challenge to photograph to say the least. Balmy summer conditions can limit our time to fuss over the details on the real thing. Here we have our standard "fake" ice cream recipe made from margarine, corn syrup and sugar....technically edible, you really don't want to eat this stuff (although that didn't stop "Miss Kayla".....my gluttonous black lab from devouring a batch when I wasn't looking!)
|
Hospitality Hotspot
| I am lucky to have the opportunity to visit and photograph many of the city's new and hip hotspots. So when an assignment came up to shoot The Diamond, I was thrilled to experience this gem. Nestled atop Gastown's Maple tree square, this restored beauty is the place to be. Pictured here are owners, Mark Brand, Josh Pape and Sophie Taverner.....these cool cats knock out some serious classic cocktails, paired smartly with Asian influenced small plates suitable for a little sip and snack action while watching the Gastown activities below.
|
Beverage of the Month
| It just isn't summer without your lemonade, this version is our tropical fruit rendition made with watermelon, raspberries, lychee and limes. An exploration in complimentary colors, our pretty pink refreshment photographed well against the green foliage of our studio garden.
|
Foodie Favorites
| In the summer spirit and our relentless quest to get outside more, the faves this term honor all that is organic, natural and sustainable....real food folks, right from the ground. From organic garlic, to Jerusalem artichokes, apple picking and berry collecting, to B.C's trademark cranberries and Okanagan wine grapes...gotta love summer!
|
Sweet Endings
| This trio of lemon, lime, coconut tarts perfectly hits the spot or hot summer entertaining. Food stylist Carol Jensson drapes these classic almond tart shells with a light and tangy lemon lime curd....dressed with a smooth and sweet creme fraiche and a generous sprinkling of coconut, you can't possibly think of anything other than sunny days on the patio with family and friends.

Marketplace
| Berries

| You may be able to get berries all year round "now a days" but nothing tastes better than when it's in season. The bonus is picking them yourself! Practically in our backyards, the Fraser Valley is the hub for U pick berries, where Krause Berry and Driediger Farms do it right with fun family events and "as Grandma made it" baked goodies.
