Foodie Highlights                                                                june 2010

June marks exciting news with the release of the Applied Arts Photo and Illustration Awards...I am thrilled to announce that my work has won an award in the self promotion category for this spice series....taking a more artistic approach and feeding my creative soul, turns out pays off: this award brings sought after distinction to many artists and I am honored to be among such talent. Now back to the commercial work...the "gravy shots" -literally, taken here for Imagine Gravy. Onto my mushroom affair...where I spent a lot of time in the last 3 weeks shooting these fascinating fungi for Avina mushrooms, the entire line from shiitakes to enokis, my umami sensors are fulfilled. Then off to my foodie excursions for the Georgia Straight, I visited Curry2U to photograph owner Shaffeen Jamal serving up his delicious curry concoctions in the handy tiffin take away tin. Also the cheery Chef Shallow Kadir boasting his fresh fish creations at Fishworks in North Vancouver. I wrapped up with a shoot at Senhor Rooster, a somewhat secret, (not so secret with an abundance of loyal regular clientele!) gem offering expertly prepared Portuguese dishes by Chef/owner Daniel Alexandre such as this rack of lamb served up along side the live music and dancing, a "Euro-East Van" experience!

Food Styling Tips, Tricks & Techniques
Here our pale, unevenly toasted bread gets a make-over cereal 2from
food stylist Carol Jensson, pulling out a few more tricks with the handy kitchen bouguet, a multi-purpose browning agent made mostly for gravies and sauces. Using a dry brush and just a smidge of our diluted brown "gold" (this hero often comes to our aide in food styling) Carol paints in the dull piece of toast to a lovely golden brown.
Hospitality Hotspot

Nestled along the seawall under the Burrard Bridge, this quaint patio hangout is the place to chill with a summer cocktail, have a bite to eat....and do a little people watching as boats, bikers, lovers and rollerbladers stroll on by. The Burrard Bridge Bar & Grill aka the "Pirate Pub" (suitably named for it's pirate themed interior decor) is operated by the successful Daniel Group, parents to the popular Delilahs, Stanley Park's Prospect Point, and Mill Marine Bistro. This editorial shoot was all about capturing the essence and summer vibe on the patio, where I had the best of times "getting in" with the locals and expert server delivering these tasty mussels and fish & chips....perfect summer fare. Soccer fans take note...the Pirate Pub and Mill Marine Bistro will be showing the FIFA soccer games, June 11th-July 11th.

Beverage of the Month
margaritaTouring through Courtney and Comox on the East side of Vancouver Island during summer time was one of my best culinary experiences ever. I was lucky enough to be on assignment for EAT Magazine, where I found myself at
Tita's Restaurant shooting their outrageously delicious, authentic Mexican fare (using local ingredients no less) and what pairs better than a lime margarita...fresh squeezed lime juice, premium tequila, sea salt.... the taste of Mexico is one ferry away.
Foodie Favorites

We are honoring charcuterie this month, a trend that took Vancouver by storm a few years back...and I believe here to stay. That said I've been on numerous shoots involving these salty, smokey, picante pork delicacies. Les Amis du Fromage may say cheese, but their meat slicer doesn't mess around, lodging a beautiful parma ham ready for a paper thin shaving. Lolo on Lonsdale in North Vancouver serves up this peppery salami along with their house made chutneys. 2 Rivers selection of sausages is killer....and a few trips to Campagnolo with their custom aged ham leg by Chef Rob Belcham, as well as their "cure" salumi platter, perfect for sharing. Lastly, "The One" who pioneered it all with Gastown's Salt Tasting Room, Sean Heather's selection of "Salt" goodies photographed here with his vintage slicer.
Sweet Endings
Challenging to photograph, not so challenging to eat:         choco cake
chocolate, one of my favorite fattening foods (albeit a superfood) keeps me paying penance at the gym regularly. This dark chocolate molten cake met it's destiny with an even darker oozey sauce, topped with spun sugar all this needed was the right lighting techniques, a few well chosen props, and the wow ("I want to devour this right now") factor......delivered.

Cool as a cucumber, this skilled "Chef-ette" mans the kitchen for the famous John Bishop at Bishops Restaurant on West 4th Ave. A pleasure to photograph, tolerating all my gear as I intruded on her home kitchen for yet another traveling editorial piece.
