May is Local Organic Produce Month!
Local in-Season Produce Arriving Daily
Come into your local KWF to see what's in season from our local suppliers!
Purchase a Poster for a Good Cause
Kimberton Whole Foods will be conducting a fundraiser in May and June with the help of Grid Magazine to benefit PASA's Brownback Scholarship Fund. The fund allows young/new organic farmers to attend the Farming for the Future conference and classes free of charge each year. 18x24 full color posters of the above pictured 'Mother Nature' KWF poster will be available for sale at $25 each to raise donations for the scholarship fund. Posters can be purchased at any of our locations, or can be made in the coming weeks by visiting Grid Magazine's online store (coming soon)! This 'Mother Nature' poster was specially commissioned for Kimberton Whole Foods by local artist, Kirsten Harper.
Why Should I Buy Local and Organic?
There are many great reasons to eat Local Organic food, but to outline the benefits clearly, we've put together a list including why eating LOCAL and ORGANIC are important goals, as well as the contributions Kimberton Whole Foods takes pains to accomplish on behalf of thesInclude poster, note that they're on sale with proceeds going to PA agriculture.
Why Buy Local?
1. Locally grown food tastes better. Food grown in your own community was probably picked within the past day or two. It's crisp, sweet and loaded with flavor. Several studies have shown the average distance food travels from farm to plate is 1,500 miles. 2. Local food preserves genetic diversity. In the modern industrial agricultural system, varieties are chosen for their ability to ripen simultaneously and withstand harvesting equipment; for a tough skin that can survive packing and shipping; and for an ability to have a long shelf life in the store. Only a handful of hybrid varieties of each fruit and vegetable meet those rigorous demands, so there is little genetic diversity in the plants grown. Local farms, in contrast, grow a huge number of varieties to provide a long season of harvest, an array of eye-catching colors, and the best flavors. Many varieties are heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation. 3. Local food is GMO-free. Although biotechnology companies have been trying to commercialize genetically modified fruits and vegetables, they are currently licensing them only to large factory-style farms. Local farmers most likely won't use genetically modified seeds. 4. Local food supports local farm families & communities. With fewer than one million Americans now claiming farming as their primary occupation, farmers are a vanishing breed. A farmer now gets less than 10 cents of the retail food dollar. Local farmers who sell direct to consumers receive the full retail price for their food - which means farm families can afford to stay on the farm, doing the work they love. When you buy directly from your farmer, you are establishing a relationship. Relationships built on understanding and trust can thrive. 5. Local food is about the future. By supporting local farmers today, you can help ensure that there will be farms in your community tomorrow, and that future generations will have access to nourishing, flavorful, and abundant food.
Why Buy Organic?
- Preserves prime agricultural land.
- Does not disturb the natural cycle of the earth's delicate ecosystem
- Reduces the use of pollutant fossil fuels
- Fewer synthetic chemicals in our bodies and in our groundwater
- Strengthens the local farm economy therefore assuring the livelihood of hard working committed growers and agricultural workers
The Kimberton Whole Foods Contribution - Kimberton Whole Foods offers 90% organic produce, and what is not organic is local
- We work with local vendors from the eastern PA area, helping to support small family farms, and support many local organizations and projects that aim to support our local foodshed
- KWF supports over 70 local businesses and farmers located within 150 miles of the Kimberton store location

We Say Goodbye to Barby, the Baker
Barby Bonnet, Kimberton's beloved baker, will be leaving us to pursue her dreams at a bakery shop in Phoenixville. We have all grown to love Barby's yummy Hootie Hoos and Raspberry Bars not to mention all the other delicious cookies and treats. We will miss having both Barby and her treats in our stores. We are hoping this will be a temporary situation as we explore the beginnings of another relationship with Barby as one of our local vendors. Thanks Barby for filling our bellies (and our waistlines) with delectable treats! Good luck on your new adventure.
