Cornucopia Institute: Are your Organic Eggs Really Organic?
| |
The Cornucopia Institute recently put out an important publication on organic egg production. Many purportedly organic eggs are apparently being raised in factory farm settings, raising questions about the standards required for organic egg labeling.
"Scrambled Eggs: Separating Factory Farm Egg Production from Authentic Organic Agriculture" is definitely worth a read on the Cornucopia website. The full article can be downloaded towards the bottom of this page.

Parking Spaces at the Kimberton Location
| |
Some of our customers have noticed the front two parking spaces are no longer available for parking at our Kimberton location. We apologize for the inconvenience. Due to the number of accidents that have occurred over the past several months because of blocked views of oncoming traffic, we felt the safety of our customers needed to come first. Thank you making use of our additional parking in the back and for your understanding.

Healthy Diet Staples

A few examples of healthy, great value items you can buy at Kimberton Whole Foods!
White Quinoa

Available in the KWF bulk section at $3.89 per lb. For those who are unfamiliar with Quinoa, it is a grain-like crop originating in South America and is grown primarily for its edible seeds. Quinoa has become highly appreciated for its nutritional value, as its protein content is very high (12%-18%). Unlike wheat or rice (which are low in lysine), and like oats, quinoa contains a balanced set of essential amino acids for humans, making it an unusually complete protein source among plant foods. It is a good source of dietary fiber and phosphorus and is high in magnesium and iron. Quinoa is gluten-free and considered easy to digest. Use it in dishes that might otherwise call for couscous or rice. Find a great recipe using quinoa here.
Organic Yogurt
Available in the KWF refrigerated dairy section, we sell many types of active natural yogurts including yogurt from the locally operated Seven Stars Yogurt available in quarts at $3.29 for plain and $4.49 for Vanilla and Maple varieties. Including Live cultures in diet are associated with lowering risks of colon cancer, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, improving immune function and preventing infections.
Organic Flax Seeds
Also available in the KWF bulk section at $2.59 per lb., flax seeds can help enhance diets with their health benefits. Flax seeds have a nutty taste and can be added to hot or cold cereals, or can be ground and sprinkled on meals. Flax contains 27 known cancer preventing compounds and is high in omega-3 fatty acid as well as being cholesterol lowering. Try sprinkling a handful on oatmeal or on salads.

| Support Local in 2011 | |
To make a difference in the economy in 2011, the most effective strategy you can take is to choose local. Really! Studies have estimated that for every $100 spent at national big box stores only $14 is distributed back into the local economy, while that same $100 spent at local businesses pump a whopping $45 back into the community. That's a huge difference. Additionally, spending $100 online will return almost non-existent amounts back to the local economy.
Try this: A concept called the 3/50 project.
Basically it challenges consumers to choose 3 locally owned businesses that would be sorely missed if they had to close their doors, and spend $50 at each during the course of each month. The 3/50 project states that if half of our community's population pledged to do this every month, we could pump much more valuable and needed revenue back into our local economy that would otherwise be lost by shopping in big box stores, national chains or online.

Fundraiser ending January 15th!
Orion Communities' mission is to engender hope, dignity and self-reliance in those experiencing poverty, disability or illness.
Orion Communities works within the greater Phoenixville area to help those residents whose needs are not being met by other resources. Orion Communities is making a difference in our area through:
· support of single parent families in times of crisis · Assisting in employment initiatives that include transportation · Offering individual advocacy and helping to empower those with disabilities
During the first half of 2010, Orion Communities helped local community members complete resumes and find jobs, provided tokens or gas for medical appointments and job interviews, as well as provided families or individuals with food, housing and basic needs in times of crisis.
Please consider donating to this very worthy cause this holiday season! An event for the fundraiser will be taking place on December 9th at the Kimberton Cafe. Details here.
How can I donate?
At checkout, inform your cashier the amount you would like to donate. Cash, credit card, debit and checks (payable to Kimberton Whole Foods) are welcome. Each store will also have a donation jar available for cash donations. The fundraiser will be running until January 15th and KWF will match donations made up to $2,500, so please give what you can!
