Douglassville Produce

Part of Kimberton Whole Foods mission statement states: "to be a dynamically supportive marketplace for organic farmers and their products".  Here at the Douglassville store, we take pride in our focus to serve our customers who need to follow gluten-free diets. Many new customers come in looking worried and bewildered because they or their children have recently been diagnosed with Celiac disease and they have no idea what they are allowed to eat.  Many are also concerned with the drastic dietary changes they think they will have to make.  We enjoy offering our customers relief and excitement at the many choices of products they can eat. What's even better is knowing how really delicious the gluten free products can be!

It can be a daunting and occasionally discouraging task to go food shopping having to carefully check every label making sure you or your loved ones can eat a product.  For people who have Celiac disease - or people who perhaps just have a gluten intolerance -  this means avoiding wheat, rye, barley, or any derivatives from these grains in food products. For someone who has never had to avoid certain foods, this can be a scary prospect. That's why the KWF staff at Douglassville try to make things easier for our gluten intolerant customers by marking every certified gluten free product we carry with a yellow colored price tag. Though some products seem like they might be gluten free, there are varying degrees of severity when it comes to symptoms of gluten intolerance that it can be difficult to gauge whether it really is safe for those with Celiac disease.  For this reason we only mark products that come from dedicated gluten-free facilities to protect our customers who need to avoid absolutely all possible gluten contamination. We believe it is worth the extra time to qualify our authentically gluten free products especially when we hear how thankful our customers are when they learn about our system.

Part of what I love about working for Kimberton Whole Foods is working for a company that holds such high standards for the products it carries, and really puts out extra effort to meet the needs of our customers and surrounding community. For our little Douglassville store, the marking of yellow tags may seem like a small effort, yet I see daily how much it is valued by those who rely on it.

Earth Day Roundup - what a success!
A great time was had by all: new friendships, bright ideas, and unique experiences... what more could we ask for?

Community electronics recycling effort from 9am-12pm kept hundreds of items out of the landfill.  Many attendees also helped with the Riparian Buffer Plantings, working to improve the grounds of the Kimberton Waldorf School, where the event was held.

Electronic Recycling

A diverse collection of local companies set up tables, some selling their wonderful, sustainable items so that attendees had something special to take with them, others sharing their vast knowledge on "how to do the right thing."  Some of the locals included:

Maysie's Farm (beautiful hand-picked produce and seedlings), Donald Pell Gardens (also gave a talk), Eastern PA Permaculture Guild, Brown Paper Bugs (beautiful paintings of bugs and reptiles on recycled brown paper), Walt's Swarmbustin' Honey (complete with a glass observation hive), Kolb's Dairy, Weimer's Organics, John Keslick (the famous Tree Biologist), Zukay Live Food, Sun and Earth Cleaning Products (with tons of generous samples), Gaia Herbs, the friendly ladies of SunnyPaw Dog Treats, Nancy Boudrie of Awaken with Light and her talented daughter, Yellow Springs Farm (gorgeous native plants and goat cheese), Organic Mechanic Soil, Camphill Kimberton Hills and Sweetwater Baking (handcrafted baked goods and incredible functional art), Greenable Building Products (so many gorgeously green options) & many more!

Maysie's Farm

We were especially lucky to have PASA (Pennsylvania Assn. for Sustainable Agriculture) arrive with the official Buy Fresh Buy Local Toyota Prius!

Lots of free talks: Soil Chemistry, Green Roofs, Sustainable Landscaping, Sustainable Agriculture...and much more.

In addition to the generous samples and gifts, three lucky attendees won a mountain bike, a gift card, and a book on natural cleaning methods, all part of our KWF raffle.

We took a tour of the incredible Kimberton Waldorf School (www.kimberton.org) Garden Building and the organic gardens created by the students, which the school uses to support many of its school lunches.

Attendees came from all around: Philadelphia, Wilmington, the Main Line...all looking to be part of this little green gathering. The cloudy, windy weather didn't keep anyone away! We hope to reach out even further next year, to educate more people and welcome them to think about their daily impact on the Earth.

Overall, what a great vibe of community, cooperation, friendship, and a shared interest in preserving the Earth for future generations. To us, that's the definition of a successful event! Thanks so much to all who participated. We are already planning for next year...

The World According to Monsanto

World According to Monsanto

May 26, 7:00 pm

At Grove United Methodist Church, 490 West Boot Road, West Chester, PA

"On March 11 a new documentary was aired on French television (ARTE - French-German cultural TV channel) by French journalist and film maker Marie-Monique Robin, Le Monde Selon Monsanto (The World According to Monsanto) - A documentary that you won't see on American television. The gigantic biotech corporation Monsanto is threatening to destroy the agricultural biodiversity which has served mankind for thousands of years.

"How much outrage can a single multinational corporation inspire? How much damage can they inflict? The breathtaking new film, The World According to Monsanto, features a company that sets the new standard. From Iowa to Paraguay, from England to India, Monsanto is uprooting our food supply and replacing it with their patented genetically engineered creations. And along the way, farmers, communities, and nature become collateral damage.

"The Gazette says the movie "will freeze the blood in your veins." The Hour says it's a "horrifying enough picture" to warrant "fury." But most importantly, this critical film opens our eyes just in time.

"The film is the work of celebrated award-winning French filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin, whose three years of work on four continents exposes why Monsanto has become the world's poster child for malignant corporate influence in government and technology. Combining secret documents with accounts by victims, scientists and policy makers, she guides us through a web of misleading reports, pressure tactics, collusion, and attempted corruption. And we learn how the company systematically tricked governments into allowing dangerous genetically modified (GM) foods into our diet-with Monsanto in charge of determining if they're safe." - Review by Jeffrey M. Smith"

                 **************************

The film will be followed by a panel discussion led by Terry Brett; owner of Kimberton Whole Foods, and Yvonne Post; a representative of the Chester County Farmers Market Mgrs group, owner of Cooking For Real, and a PASA advisory member and BFBL steering committee member.
