'Clean' doesn't always mean healthy
Spring is here and with it the opportunity for motivated individuals to corall dust bunnies and shake out allergens in the home. But will just any cleaning products do?
Check out the labels on your bathroom, kitchen or floor cleaners and safeguard that the ingredients aren't toxic to you and your family. Many conventional cleaning products contain dangerous ingredients including neurotoxins, carcinogens, allergens, central nervous system depressants, heavy metals, and other agents that cause or contribute to cancer, respiratory problems, reproductive abnormalities, allergic reactions, and behavioral problems, among other issues. Some of these include phosphates, Trisodium nitrilotriacetate and Phthalates to name a few.
Choose free and clear cleaning products which don't mask their cleaning ingredients with heavy synthetic fragrances or dyes and use plant derived ingredients as opposed to petroleum derived ones.

| Earth Day - Save the Date! | |
A relaxing day with friends and family celebrating community and nature...what could be better?
Join us April 17th from 9am 4 pm for our Earth Day Celebration: A Community Partnership between Kimberton Waldorf School and Kimberton Whole Foods focusing on sustainable agriculture and green initiatives.
Sponsored by Kimberton Whole Foods and held at the Kimberton Waldorf School (410 W. Seven Stars Road, Phoenixville, PA 19460)
The day will begin with community plantings (bring a shovel and join in) followed by electronics recycling from 9 to 12 PM (bring your unwanted electronics and recycle them) in the parking lot in front of the school.
Items to be collected include: computers, cell phones, keyboards, stereos, televisions, monitors, printers, cables, floppy disks, CDs, office machines, calculators, DVD and CD players, and more. Disposal of computer monitors require a $10 fee. The electronic waste will be recycled through A Plus Industries of Allentown, PA. Documentation of secure disposal will be provided upon request.
The E-waste collection will be followed by organic lunch and several speakers on green topics such as permaculture, living roofs, green building, green landscaping, and much more!
Free movie screenings of Food Fight, Fresh, and children's selections.
Local farmers, PASA representatives, artists, and earth-friendly vendors, many of whom work with Kimberton Whole Foods, will offer displays and demonstrations. There will be face painting, local music, beekeeping demonstrations, candle making, a raffle for a mountain bike and raffles for Seventh Generation gift cards!
Afternoon festivities go from 12 pm to 4 pm. Lots to do and lots to learn.
Join us...all are welcome to this free event to promote "green" living. See you there! *Volunteers are needed both for the Ewaste recycling event, as well as for the Earth Day festivities that follow. Contact Pat Andrien at 610-469-0905 or Briana Brant of Kimberton Whole Foods at 610-935-1444

| Haiti - Tools and Gardening Items Needed |
|
|
We would like to thank the generous Kimberton Whole Foods community for donating supplies to the relief effort in Haiti!
We've received plenty of clothing and some food, but find that gardening items and tools are still needed. If you are able to donate any of these items, Aldo Magazenni of the Traveling Mercies would greatly appreciate it!
| | Non-GMO Facebook fanbase surpasses 10,000 members | |
April 6th, April 6, 2010-This past weekend, the number of fans on the Non-GMO Project's Facebook page reached and then quickly exceeded 10,000 people, evidencing growing public concern about GMOs and corresponding demand for all things non-GMO. The page features a mix of breaking news, links to studies, and updates on the brands and retailers involved in the Non-GMO Project.
Perhaps even more significant than the number of fans is how active the fanbase is, with an average of around 2,500 visits each week, and passionate strings of commentary quickly following every post. "Facebook is an amazing tool for us," says Non-GMO Project Executive Director Megan Westgate. "It is so inspiring to see how many people there are out there who are standing up for their right to an informed choice about what they eat. The Facebook format allows us to host some really important conversations about the GMO issue."
A post Sunday evening asking users to share their reasons for being fans of the page quickly generated 89 comments. Julie Punty Olsen of Los Angeles expressed a sentiment common to other fans with health concerns when she said, "[The] Non-GMO Project has educated me on GMO and how it affects our food supply and our health. As a cancer survivor, I need to do everything I can to keep my body clean and free of unnatural substances; the Non-GMO Project is helping me do just that."
Many users also cited the wellbeing of future generations as their motivation for being fans of the Non-GMO Project. Bob Shade of Nashville, Oregon said he was a fan "because I have grandchildren and would like to believe it's possible for them to have a clean, organic, natural food supply for their grandchildren." And user Shelley Boyle wrote, "I'm a fan because I depend on and value your help in finding out what is best for my body, my family, my neighbors, the farmers and ultimately, my world!"
The Non-GMO Project created its Facebook page about a year ago, and has its sights set on the 100,000 fan mark next. To learn more, please visit: http://non-gmoproject.createsend.com/t/r/l/blytly/tihrjihid/j |
