December Nutrition Tip
From Heather Wolfe, M.S.
The kids are in school, hockey season has started and the weather is turning chilly. This is the time of year that noses start to run, throats get a little scratchy and adults fear the "kid germs". There are things that we parents can do to help prevent our kids from getting sick.
- Echinacea - this natural herb will enhance your own immune system. It can be found at almost all health food stores, but make sure to talk to a trained herbalist about dosage amounts for children. Start taking it as soon as you feel the slightest bit unwell.
- Vitamin C - this simple vitamin can fight off invading germs. You don't have to take in massive amounts of vitamin C to boost your immune system. Around 200 milligrams a day seems to be a generally agreed-upon amount and one that can be automatically obtained by eating at least six servings of fruits and vegetables a day. If you take vitamin C supplements, it's best to space them throughout the day rather than take one large dose, most of which may end up being excreted in the urine.
- Fruits and vegetable supplement - the immune-boosting properties of nature's food is remarkable. The anti-oxidants found in fruits and vegetables are incomparable to any supplement found in the store, but if you can't get your kid to eat the healthy stuff, there are supplement options out there.
- Zinc - this mineral is a safe and effective way to boost the immune system. It increases the production of white blood cells that fight infection and helps them fight more aggressively.
- Probiotics are healthy bacteria that live in our intestines and help with our immune system. The best species of probiotics are lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. Dairy products such as yogurt and kefir are the best sources but they are also available as liquid, powder, and capsules, children and adults can take as directed.
- Avoid weakening your own immune system - The fastest ways to weaken ones immune system are overdosing on sugar, an excess of alcohol, food allergens, and too much body fat. Food allergens aren't something that you can really do something about except avoid the foods that you have a sensitivity or allergy too. As for the rest of the suggestions, cut back on your sugar, have one less drink, and go for a walk.
If you do happen to get sick remember hot foods for colds. Foods such as cayenne peppers, hot mustards, garlic, and onions will help break up the mucus in your system and fight off that cold or flu faster. |
