AVOID TAX REFUND FRAUDS
Tax-filing season brings out tax-preparation frauds. The lastest scheme involves refunds sent as a Direct Deposit or ACH credit where tax professional impersonators complete a return using the victim's name and account numbers along with fraudulent information designed to obtain a larger refund.
The refund is then transmitted and the bogus preparer withdraws a hefty tax preparation fee, leaving the rest of the credit to the victim. The IRS will attempt to reclaim these funds once the fraud is uncovered.
Avoid this and other scams by:
- Not using tax preparers who claim to know something special or that they can get more money than anyone else;
- Sitting with your tax preparer as they fill out your tax forms--never sign a blank form and trust them to file it;
- and being suspicious of a tax preparer who bases their fee on a percentage of the promised refund.
