The Dragon Boat Race and Festival Board of Directors and Committee would like to thank everyone who participated, sponsored and attended the Saturday, May 21st event!
Heartfelt thanks go to the volunteers. Because of the economy and lack of sponsors, without the help of our volunteers, we would not have been able to put on this event. We want to especially thank Bill and Marty Glaser who organized all of these wonderful volunteers. We could not have done this without their help.
A big thank you also goes to Michelle Whitaker from the TDA, who helped with press releases and marketing, and Vicki and Lynn Smith of The Geneva Riverside and Tiki Bar which sponsored the kick-off Dragon Slayer Welcome reception for our paddlers and volunteers.
The W.B Given's Band from Nashville, who was our feature band for the festival, also played for us at the Tiki Bar on Friday night! The festival included terrific food vendors, a full magic show, Dragon and Lion Dancers, Kung-Fu demonstrations, face painting, balloon tying and a children's inflatable area. Asheville Citizens-Times was on hand and documented the race and festival with fabulous photos which also can be viewed on our face book page and website.
Nine teams competed with our own Lake Lure Classical Academy taking 3rd place. This group of paddlers and their drummer pulled out all stops to participate and we are so proud of, and so grateful for, these wonderful folks who make up our school! Second place went to S.S. Sunray. Thank you Dale and Diane Burgett for sponsoring your team! First place was Resurgent 2011 from Charleston, South Carolina and team leader, William Dion said it was the most fun race they have participated in!
The Dragon Boat Race and Festival is a not for profit organization. This year's beneficiaries are the Hickory Nut Gorge Outreach Center and Camp Lure Crest. God gave us a glorious day and the enthusiasm and camaraderie of the team members was awe inspiring. The most rewarding part of the whole festival however were the smiles on the faces of hundreds of families and children who were able to enjoy the climbing wall, inflatables, magic show, music and festival at NO CHARGE! Thank you sponsors!
Lake Lure's Season of the Dragon will run all summer with the final race taking place on Saturday August 27th during the Olympiad. The 2012 Dragon Boat Race and Festival will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012. We encourage everyone to get a team together and start practicing now for both events. For more information on how you can get involved, become a sponsor or vendor, and view photos of this year's event, please visit our website at www.Lureofthedragons.org. Stats of this year's race were posted "live" on Twitter!!! You can also find us on Face book. PADDLE'S UP!

OLYMPIAD RAISES $10K FOR RUTHERFORD COUNTY
LAKE LURE, N.C. (May 19, 2011): Despite a struggling economy and tighter checkbooks, the Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad raised $10,000 for Rutherford County charities and community service organizations at its second annual auction hosted by Firefly Cove on May 1 in Lake Lure.
Proceeds from the auction, along with other funds raised at Olympiad events this year, will benefit
Camp Lurecrest, Lake Lure Classical Academy, Boy Scouts of Rutherford and Polk Counties, and the volunteer and municipal fire departments in Lake Lure, Bill's Creek, Chimney Rock, Bat Cave and the Hickory Nut Gorge EMS.
As Rutherford County regains economic footing after the loss of textile mills and other key employers, funding from the Olympiad, an annual sports festival organization, is especially important to these non-profit organizations.
"Through their participation in the benefit auction, our generous donors and equally generous buyers allow us to continue to support and assist our beneficiaries. The auction is a wonderful community effort and we are most grateful to all who help to make it a success," said members of the Olympiad Board.
Leading the bidding war again this year was Lake Lure's own Patti Blenden whose quick wit and comedic banter kept the bidders anxious and excited. But for Blenden, the main goal of her involvement is to give back to the community.
"We must contribute our time, our money, and most importantly, our hearts to continue strengthening our town's infrastructure, stressed Blenden. "We are all in it for the long haul and believe deeply in our little slice of paradise."
The auction was very well attended and guests were treated to hors d'oeuvres courtesy of Larkin's on the Lake. Over 100 items were available for purchase in the silent and live auctions. Top bids went for Braves baseball tickets, NASCAR tickets, two resort vacations, and a plane flight over Lake Lure. The Olympiad board credits its auction committee for the event's success, especially Linda and Woody Turner, Judy Arnold, Kay Dittmer, Char Leneschmidt, Janet Walters, Paula Moore, Del Jones, Susie Eury, Lyn Weaver, Jeannie Porter, Jayne Mann, Mary Lou DeAugtines and Wendy Field.
About the Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad:
The Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad is a non-profit organization that produces an annual sports festival for all ages and abilities, as well as other yearly fundraisers in Lake Lure, N.C. Since 2005, the Olympiad has raised more than $180,000 for charity. Save the date for the 2011 Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad presented by Rumbling Bald Resort on August 26-28. For more information, visit www.HickoryNutOlympiad.com, find us on Facebook, or call 828-429-9011.
