Mixed Methods in Healthcare Delivery Systems Research
Deadline:  October 15, 2012
Health Services Research and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) are partnering to publish a Special Issue on Mixed Methods in Healthcare Delivery Systems Research. Although mixed methods research has been defined in various ways, for this call the following definition captures the essence: Mixed methods research combines and systematically integrates quantitative and qualitative methods in a single study to obtain a fuller picture and deeper understanding of a phenomenon (Johnson et al., 2007). The aim of the special issue is to provide researchers, funders, and policy makers with a better understanding of how mixed methods studies may contribute to health services research and to promote and facilitate the expanded use of mixed methods designs in delivery system research. This issue will consist of reports on results from exemplary mixed-methods studies and papers that advance an understanding of principles underlying mixed methods research or address specific methodological challenges in this type of research. The papers will illustrate how mixed methods can be used to advance research on care delivery, delivery systems, and the implementation delivery system change.  Papers are particularly encouraged that use mixed methods to illuminate the implementation and effects of recent changes in payment, reporting, and design of care delivery. Special Edition of Social Work and Christianity: Towards A Christian Critique of Evidence-based Practice in Social Work
Deadline: September 1, 2012
Evidence-based Practice (EBP) is now entering its second decade in social work scholarship and practice. This approach has made progress in advancing the social work profession toward the use of evidence and empirically-supported interventions (Franklin & Kelly, 2009).  This special issue seeks to add a Christian perspective to the literature on the implementation of EBP in social work practice, policy, and education. Papers for this special issue are encouraged to look at EBP as a process that integrates clinical expertise, client circumstances, research evidence, and client values and to formulate a paper discussing one or all of those dimension from a Christian perspective. Papers can employ a variety of methodologies, though special emphasis will be given to papers that use a conceptual lens to build a foundation to either critique or defend EBP from a Christian social work perspective. Papers can be up to 20 pages, double-spaced and in APA style (6th Ed.) and are due by September 1st, 2012. Contact mkell17@luc.edu with any questions and to submit papers as email attachments.

Insuring Those Who Served
(Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)
One in 10 of the country's 12.5 million nonelderly veterans report neither having insurance coverage, nor using Veterans Affairs care, according to a report released by RWJF. The report by Urban Institute researchers is the first ever to provide estimates of uninsurance among veterans and their families both nationally and at the state level, and to assess the potential for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to reduce their uninsurance rates. The authors conclude that with ACA's implementation, nearly half of uninsured veterans could have access to coverage through Medicaid expansions, and another 40 percent could potentially qualify for subsidized coverage in newly created health insurance exchanges, provided they do not have access to affordable employer-sponsored coverage. Sexual Victimization Reported by Former State Prisoners, 2008
Allen J. Beck, Ph.D., BJS, Candace Johnson, Ph.D., NORC
(Bureau of Justice Statistics)
Presents data on sexual victimization experienced by former state prisoners during their prior term of incarceration, including any time served in a local jail, state prison, or postrelease community-correctional facility. This report is based on data from the first-ever National Former Prisoner Survey, conducted between January 2008 and October 2008. The report provides detailed information on the experiences of persons age 18 or older who were under active supervision following their release from custody. It provides data on the prevalence of sexual victimization while incarcerated, by the type of victimization and sex of former inmate. The report also examines individual-level and facility-level characteristics that may be correlated with sexual victimization and describes the circumstances surrounding victimization. It provides details on the post-release responses of victims to sexual victimization, HIV rates of victims, and information on current employment status, housing, and living arrangements.
