Ninth Annual Institute on Aging and Social Work
Deadline: March 28, 2012
Nationally recognized experts in research methodology will lead a training institute specifically designed for social work faculty who received their doctoral degree at least three years ago in any area of social work. NIH launches first online genetics course for social and behavioral scientists
A new genetics educational program will provide social and behavioral scientists with sufficient genetics background to allow them to engage effectively in interdisciplinary research with genetics researchers. The Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) at the National Institutes of Health, partnered with the National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics to create the free, Web-based project. Increasingly, scientific outcomes are not fully explained by genetic, environmental, or social factors alone or as independent contributors. Instead, public health advances and scientific breakthroughs tend to rely on transdisciplinary teams of social scientists and genetic researchers. This creates a greater need among social and behavioral scientists for an understanding of the complexity of the genetic contribution to health, disease and behaviors. 2010 National Survey Of Residential Care Facilities
The National Center for Health Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control released results from its 2010 survey of the 31,000 residential care facilities (RCF) in the U.S. that provide 971,000 beds nationwide. About half of RCFs were small facilities with 4-10 beds, and about 4 in 10 RCFs had one or more residents who had some or all of their long-term care services paid by Medicaid, while extra large RCFs (100+ beds) were least likely (32%) to serve residents whose services were paid for by Medicaid. Forty-two percent of RCFs are located in the West, while only 8% are located in the Northeast. Click here for more information.

New Changes for the AREA Program
Many NIH programs that exist beyond the scope of the R01. One such program is the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA). These awards create hands-on research opportunities for faculty and students at less research-intensive institutions (less than $6M in research and training funds per year). AREA awards provide up to 3 years of renewable funding, with a maximum of $300,000 in direct costs for the entire project period. Click here for more information.
