This program provides funding to increase the availability of high-quality, multidisciplinary, didactic training and research project guidance, in the context of a mentored research career transition experience. The K25 Award will support the career development of quantitatively trained investigators who make a commitment to basic biomedical, clinical biomedical, bioengineering, bioimaging, and behavioral research that is relevant to the NIH mission. At the completion of the award, candidates should have both the knowledge and the skills necessary to compete for independent research support from NIH, or to participate as leading members of multi-disciplinary research teams. Evaluation of the Honest Opportunity Probation With Enforcement Demonstration Field Experiment (HOPE DFE)
Deadline: July 6, 2011
As part of a collaborative effort with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) to implement and rigorously test important criminal justice interventions and programs, NIJ seeks competitive proposals for a single award that will support a multi-site randomized controlled trial (RCT) program evaluation of the HOPE DFE. Jurisdictions across the United States are seeking effective ways to maintain public safety by holding offenders accountable while at the same time reducing costs of imprisonment. A recent NIJ-funded evaluation of the Hawaii Opportunity Probation With Enforcement (HOPE) program showed that the program has great promise for reducing offending and ensuring probationer compliance by combining random drug tests with swift and certain sanctions for probation violations. Based on these positive findings, BJA will fund the expansion of the original HOPE program model implemented in Hawaii to four other sites. Every effort will be made to replicate the original program as closely as possible in the new sites. The demonstration field experiment (DFE) will examine the HOPE program's processes, outcomes, and cost effectiveness through a multi-site study conducted for the explicit purpose of generating evidence about this probation program. Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01)
Deadline: February 12, June 12, and October 12 through September 8, 2014
This program provides funding for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence. Although all of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this mechanism to support career development experiences that lead to research independence, some ICs use the K01 award for individuals who propose to train in a new field or for individuals who have had a hiatus in their research career because of illness or pressing family circumstances. Other ICs utilize the K01 award to increase research workforce diversity by providing enhanced research career development opportunities. Click here for more information.

Independent Scientist Award (K02)
Deadline: February 12, June 12, and October 12 through September 8, 2014
The program provides funding for career development programs designed to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists are available in appropriate scientific disciplines to address the Nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. This program is intended to foster the development of outstanding scientists and enable them to expand their potential to make significant contributions to their field of research. Special Issue on Standards for Social Work Practice with Groups
Deadline: October 1, 2011 (abstracts)
This special issue will focus on the development and use of standards for social work practice with groups. mHealth Evidence
Deadline: May 27, 2011
Mobile health (mHealth) has the potential to simultaneously reduce the cost of health care and improve our health by encouraging healthy behaviors, providing continuous monitoring to prevent or reduce health problems, reducing acute health care visits, and providing personalized, real-time intervention in the mobile environment. However, traditional methods of evaluation needed to address efficacy and safety in mHealth are not well aligned to the pace of technological development. To address this need, white papers are being requested on alternative research designs to the traditional randomized control trial that could be applied to mHealth intervention research or in analyses of rich longitudinal data sets that could be applied to analyzing the data obtained from mHealth applications. This request is a collaboration among the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, McKesson Foundation, the National Science Foundation and the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research at NIH. Click here for more information.

Immigrant Children are Focus of The Future of Children

(From ChildTrends: The Child Indicator Newsletter)
The Spring 2011 issue of The Future of Children, a project of Princeton University and the Brookings Institution, is devoted to immigrant children-defined as children birth to age 17 who have at least one foreign-born parent. There is great diversity within this population, as is reflected in a number of well-being indicators. The volume's ten chapters treat issues ranging from physical and psychological health, to living arrangements, educational outcomes, and adaptation to life in the U.S. Immigrant children are the fastest-growing segment of the population-as of 2008, this group comprised nearly one in four of all U.S. children-and our need to ensure their success into adulthood will directly compete against the needs of another demographic "bulge": the aging baby boomers. "Basic Economic Security Tables" Quantify Family Economic Security
(From ChildTrends: The Child Indicator Newsletter)
The effects of poverty on child well-being, evident as early as infancy, continue throughout life. Part of the calculus for any measure of poverty is an estimate of the cost of meeting basic needs. A number of different methodologies have been applied to this task, at both national and local levels. Few are as comprehensive as the recently released Basic Economic Security Tables (BEST) for the United States, 2010. A project of Wider Opportunities for Women and the Center for Social Development at Washington University (St. Louis), the BEST Index is intended as "a measure of the basic needs and assets workers require for economic security throughout a lifetime and across generations." As such, the Index can aid researchers, policymakers, and advocates in evaluating economic development, education and training needs, public assistance programs, financial planning and asset-building programs, and in raising public awareness of the components of economic security in the context of multiple family configurations.
