Funding Opportunities Social Network Analysis and Health (R01) Deadline: April 11, 2011 This FOA encourages research that aims to accomplish one or more specific goals: (1) generate new theories that would enhance the capabilities and value of Social Network Analysis (SNA); (2) address fundamental questions about social interactions and processes in social networks; (3) address fundamental questions about social networks in relation to health and health-related behaviors; (4) develop innovative methodologies and technologies to facilitate, improve, and expand the capabilities of SNA. Research Center to Support Secondary Analyses of Head Start Impact Study Data Deadline: March 31, 2011 (Letter of Intent) This cooperative agreement will provide funds to support a research center focused on secondary analysis of the Head Start Impact Study data. The overarching goal of this cooperative agreement will be to utilize existing data from the Head Start Impact Study to answer applied questions related to program characteristics that positively influence outcomes for Head Start children and families. The grant will be awarded to a single institution that will lead a consortium of researchers in the implementation of several complementary studies using the Head Start Impact Study data to answer questions related to how aspects of Head Start centers, classrooms, and teachers moderate impacts on children and families. Deaths in Custody Reporting Program, 2012-2015 Deadline: May 12, 2011 The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) seeks an agent to collect and analyze data for the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program (DCRP) for the four-year period from October 1, 2011, through September 30, 2015 (fiscal years 2012-2015). Broadly, the agent's responsibilities include data collection and analysis, managing all data collection activities efficiently and cost effectively, updating the national database of the DCRP to ensure accurate and timely data, and assisting BJS in enhancing and expanding the DCRP. Affordable Care Act (ACA): Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration Deadline: April 8, 2011 The objective of the demonstrations is to determine whether an integrated model of primary care and public health approaches in the community can improve underserved children's risk factors for obesity. These approaches may include policy, systems, and environmental supports that encourage nutrition and physical activity for underserved children and their families. Grantees will develop, implement, and evaluate multi-sectoral (i.e., childcare, school, community, health care), multi-level (i.e. child, family, organization, community, policy) intervention demonstration projects for underserved children ages 2-12 years and their families utilizing the Obesity Chronic Care Model and other similar models. Gang Field Initiated Research and Evaluation Programs Deadline: May 9, 2011 This solicitation will fund research and evaluation studies to produce practical findings for policymakers and practitioners for the development of evidence-based programs, policies, and strategies that effectively address at-risk and gang-involved youth. Topics to be addressed may include, but are not limited to: (1) youth entry into, involvement in, and desistance from gang-related crime; (2) the effectiveness of prevention approaches targeting youth at risk for gang involvement; (3) the effectiveness of intervention strategies; (4) the nature and scope of youth gangs in juvenile detention and correctional facilities; (5) the effectiveness of reentry approaches; and (6) the assessment of how tribal communities can effectively address gang-related challenges confronting at-risk and gang-involved native youth. Calls Call for ApplicationsSummer Institute in LGBT HealthDeadline: April 18, 2011The Summer Institute in LGBT Health, open to postdoctoral trainees, doctoral students and advanced Masters' students, provides participants with foundational training in interdisciplinary theory, knowledge and methods for conducting population research in sexual and gender minority health. To be held July 18-August 12 in Boston, the Institute includes a 3 week seminar that will overview key topics, methods, and perspectives in the study of LGBT Health, a one week intermediate-level statistics and data analysis course, and hands-on training and supervision in work on an independent analysis project with LGBT population health data. There is no cost for tuition and slots are available for free housing in Boston University dormitories during the Institute. Applications are due April 18, 2011. The Summer Institute is part of The National Mentoring and Training Program of the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health at The Fenway Institute and is co-sponsored by the Boston University School of Public Health. Conferences & Trainings HCUP Training Workshop May 11, 2011 AHRQ will sponsor a full-day workshop for health services researchers interested in learning more about our data resources at AHRQ Headquarters, located in Rockville, Maryland. Ideal for researchers with intermediate knowledge of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), participants will work with the HCUP databases and related tools (including HCUPnet) through manipulation of the data. A particular focus of the training will be on the HCUP Supplemental Variables for Revisit Analyses. Access to HCUP databases will also be provided during the workshop. Registration will open March 28 and information will be available on the HCUP-US Website at that time. Based on previous workshop enrollments, this training session is likely to reach capacity quickly. Additional information for this event is located on the HCUP Events page of the HCUP-US Website.
Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research Founded in 1963, the ICPSR Summer Program is recognized throughout the world as the preeminent forum for basic and advanced training in the methodologies and technologies of social science research. We serve a diverse multidisciplinary and international constituency. Our general instructional philosophy emphasizes the integration of methodological strategies with the theoretical and practical concerns that arise in research on substantive social issues. Webinar on data management plans available for viewing ICPSR's second webinar on data management plans presented by Amy Pienta, director of data acquisitions, is now available for viewing. Held Feb. 17, the session updated the ICPSR webinar on the same topic held in January. The topic has received significant attention in recent months, as the National Science Foundation announced last year that it would require data management plans with all grant applications for projects that will produce data. Medical Expenditure Panel Survey Workshop May 11-12, 2011 The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) conducts several workshops throughout the year. These workshops provide extended knowledge about MEPS data, practical information about usage of MEPS public use data files and an opportunity to construct analytic files with the assistance of AHRQ staff. The workshops are designed for health services researchers who have a background or interest in using national health surveys. Registration is now open for the upcoming Two-day hands-on MEPS Data Users' Workshop in Rockville, MD, on May 11-12, 2011. For registration and more information, click here.
OJJDP's 2011 National Conference October 12-14, 2011 National Harbor, MD On October 12-14, 2011, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention will host its National Conference, "Children's Justice & Safety: Unite, Build, Lead," at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center in National Harbor, MD. Workshops, plenaries, and presentations by leading experts and researchers will promote evidence-based practices that address emerging concerns in delinquency prevention, juvenile justice, and victimization. Topics will include crimes against children, anti-gang strategies, children's exposure to violence, disproportionate minority contact, girls' delinquency, tribal youth programs, emergency planning for juvenile justice, faith-based and community involvement, mentoring, truancy and bullying, and substance abuse, among others. Atlas of Rural & Small Town America Economic Research Service, USDA
(From the Rural Assistance Center) ERS promotes the well-being of rural America through research and analysis to better understand the economic, demographic, environmental, and social forces affecting rural regions and communities. In collaboration with other USDA agencies, ERS research helps provide rural residents and community and business leaders with the knowledge and skills to help their communities thrive in the global economy. The objectives of the Atlas are: * To provide a spatial interpretation of county-level, economic and social conditions along four dimensions: people, jobs, agriculture, and county classifications. * To highlight the value of the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey as a new source of county data and to bring together data from several different Federal sources. * To allow the use of socioeconomic indicators jointly with ERS county typologies to better understand the diverse opportunities and challenges facing rural regions and communities. Integrated Fertility Survey Series Update The Integrated Fertility Survey Series (IFSS) project at ICPSR is pleased to announce the release of its second harmonized dataset, which updates the first release and adds variables related to union history, cohabitation and husband/partner socio-demographics. The dataset combines information from 10 surveys and over 71,000 respondents spanning 1955 to 2002 into harmonized variables for easy analysis. Click here to access the data.

Recommendations Requested: Key Behavioral & Psychosocial Variables Your input is requested to help make recommendations for a standardized set of patient-reported variables to be collected in primary care and public health electronic health records (EHRs), which will lead to unprecedented data harmonization and opportunities for health research. In order to participate in this process, -Please visit the website for the collaborative tool. -Click on the blue button at the top titled "EHR Campaign." Or alternatively, click on the News tab and then the associated EHR campaign title. -Read the summary statements written by the expert panels -Rate the recommended measures and enter your comments.
