Speaking Up About Risk Management

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where a friend doesn't take the proper safety precautions and you're unsure of how to deal with it? Do you tell them to put their seatbelt on before going for a drive? Or do you tell yourself, "They're a big kid and they can make their own decisions?" For some of us, the answer might seem simple: tell them to Buckle Up. But for others, the idea of telling friends what to do might seem bossy or arrogant.

Jessica Hill, a Grade 12 student at Vanier Collegiate in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan says, "I think the main reason [that people don't speak up to their friends] is that young people don't want to seem like they're looking down on others and being judgmental. It's much easier to just go with it and take safe risks ourselves."

Why do we care so much what others think? Wouldn't you rather your friend survive in the unfortunate event of a car crash? My challenge to you is this: next time you're feeling hesitant about speaking up to a friend about a necessary safety precaution, just do it. It may help you to live your life with no regrets.

Any student leader or staff adviser can complete the online survey, which should take approximately 10 minutes to fill out. We greatly appreciate the time you put into completing it, and use your feedback to guide future program design and delivery.

Q&A with SMARTRISK's
Placement Student

Q - Name?

A - Lakshmi Sindhoora Madamanchi

Q - Current position at SMARTRISK?

A - I'm a placement student from Centennial College's Workplace Wellness and Health Promotion postgraduate certificate program. Most of the work that I've been doing at SMARTRISK so far has been with the No Regrets and No Regrets Live programs.

Q - What were you doing before you came to SMARTRISK?

A - Before attending Centennial and starting at SMARTRISK I lived in India, where I attended Nizam's Instituite of Medical Sciences. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Nursing and worked in a variety of settings as a nurse before coming to Canada.

Q - What has been your most memorable moment so far as a placement student?

A - Recently, Ned Levitt, Chair of SMARTRISK's Board of Directors and a No Regrets Live presenter, came to the SMARTRISK office and spoke to us about his experience as a father who lost his daughter Stacey to a preventable injury. Stacey was only 18 when she went out for a jog one evening with her headphones in and was hit by a car as she stepped off the curb at a red light in a busy intersection. After watching his presentation I realized how much pain a parent would suffer due to the death of a child. It was a very moving experience, and one that I will never forget.

Q - What's your favourite sport or risk taking activity?

A - I love to play volleyball and cricket - while following the 5 key messages of course!
