SMARTRISK YAB Training
Distracted Driving - Is It Worth It?

In late August 2011, the State Farm Youth Advisory Board selected SMARTRISK as a winner of a $60,000 grant to support Northern Secondary School and Leo Hayes High School in developing and implementing a distracted driving initiative.

On Oct. 25th and 26th, students from both schools came together for a training session on distracted driving and social media facilitated by SMARTRISK with the support of several key partners.

The outcome of this training session was a campaign and multimedia competition entitled "Distracted Driving - Is It Worth It?" The key messages for the competition ("My Car. My Rules" and "You're not on the road- why is your car?"), as well as the strategy behind it, were developed by the students through a series of workshops and group discussions.

All students who attend a No Regrets school are invited to submit a video between 30-180 seconds long, focused on the issue of teen distracted driving before Mar. 16, 2012. If you would like to learn more about the competition, how to get involved, and the great prizes that you could win, sign up for updates on our competition website www.isitworthit.ca. The full competition website will go live on Dec. 1, 2011.

Thank you to all those involved in the training session. It was a great success and would not have been possible without each and every one of you.

No Regrets Fall Report

The SMARTRISK youth team has just finished up our final No Regrets training session, and it is time for all of our No Regrets schools to complete the Fall Report. Any student leader or staff adviser can complete the report, and we welcome multiple responses from each school.

The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to fill out, and we greatly appreciate the time you put into completing it. We use this important feedback to guide future program design and delivery.

The deadline for completing the Fall Report is Friday, December 9th.

Project Ignition Grant Applicants

Over the past few weeks, several No Regrets teams have been hard at work putting together their Project Ignition applications. The teams came up with many amazing ideas focused on addressing the issue of teen driver safety in their communities. The following No Regrets teams have applied for a Project Ignition grant and we commend them on all of the work that went into coming up with their campaigns and filling out the application. Great work and good luck to all of our applicants!

Wear the Gear!

As colder temperatures approach it becomes important to not only wear helmets and other protective equipment, but also warm clothing. Hypothermia and frostbite become a risk when venturing outside during the winter months. The former can cause shivering, confusion, paleness, stammering, and in severe cases, even death. Frostbite can cause damage to skin tissue and may even necessitate amputation.

The key to preventing these conditions and still being able to enjoy your outdoor activities is wearing the proper clothing. Insulating, sweat wicking material is ideal, as it keeps you warm and dry. Layers are also a good idea because if you get warm then it is easy to peel off a layer of clothing, and still stay warm. Another key piece of gear is a hat because a large percentage of heat is lost through uncovered skin, which includes an exposed head of hair. Winter brings with it a whole new set of activities and fun, but wearing the gear is one of the five key messages that cannot be forgotten when taking smart risks.
