President's Letter April 2012

Greetings to all fellow Guild members! April is the last month of the Guilds' fiscal year, which runs from May 1st to April 30th. To me, it marks a time for reflection, and a time to reassess how we are meeting our goals.
As you might know, the Charleston Artist Guild was formed in 1953 by seven brave artists. We painted together, took classes together, and tried to find a place to exhibit and sell our work. Eventually we incorporated, and became a not for profit Guild with a continuing Mission to promote the practice, teaching and appreciation of Fine Arts in the Greater Charleston area.
How have we done over the last fifty-nine years?
Well, through the development of our outreach programs, and the thousands of hours of volunteer time, we now make art a part of the lives of children, the elderly, the disadvantaged, and the financially, physically, or mentally challenged members of our community.
We have monthly meetings with free programs. We offer workshops and critiques for our members and the public, we have a monthly newsletter, and something not heard of in 1953, we have a website.
Our seven members have grown to almost six hundred. And at last, we have a place to exhibit and sell our own art! The Guild now owns and operates a gallery that any organization would be proud to have. Our gallery not only serves over seventy guild artists, but the artists in turn serve the Guilds' Mission by making donations to the Guilds' outreach programs.
We have had our share of trials, some success, and shed some tears along the way. Next year will mark the Sixtieth Anniversary of the Charleston Artist Guild. Upon reflection, I think our founders would be proud.

New Scholarship Fund Established
The Charleston Artist Guild Memorial Scholarship is our newest outreach effort. Our holiday gathering provided the initial funds dedicated to this effort. Our goal is to offer a CAG scholarship each year apart from any other funding which may be provided by grants. We have designated it as a memorial scholarship because we will be accepting donations in memory of artists and art patrons whose contributions to the Guild were valued and worth noting through this effort. We will also be happy to accept any other contributions from members and patrons. Each year, when the scholarship is presented, we will acknowledge the persons in whose memory the funds were donated.
Guild members are encouraged to contribute to this effort.

Charleston Artist Guild announces
RUSSELL BUSKIRK
April 1 - April 30
Opening Reception: Friday, April 6 from 5-8 PM
(Receptions are open to the public) April Featured Artist
"Award Winning and Selected Pastel Paintings"
 | "Magnolia Oak" by Buskirk |
Russell is known for his work with pastel. Although he studied art in high school he did not pursue his love of art until 2004 when a friend's pastel work motivated him to paint the stunning green summertime marsh vistas on Folly Road. After taking workshops with Bill McCullough, Don Nagle, James Sulkowski, and Dee Beard Dean; his artwork improved and he became an Exhibiting Member of the Guild. He has been accepted into many exhibitions and has won several awards for his paintings.
Growing up in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia along with visits to the Greenbrier Hotel exposed him to classical architecture and fine art. The natural beauty of the state helped him appreciate outstanding landscapes. In his work, he strives to capture the beauty of a scenic landscape or a timeless building in his paintings. His appreciation for fine art and the great artists throughout history has inspired him to follow in their footsteps in creating artwork that he and others can enjoy. It is also gratifying to Russell to create something people want to have in their homes. Take time this April to visit the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery and enjoy the pastel work of Russell Buskirk. Gallery hours are Sunday through Saturday 11am-6pm.

EXHIBITIONS
By Russell Buskirk
Director of Exhibitions
2012 High School Seniors Exhibition
The show was a huge success on many levels. All the students had their artwork on display in the bank lobby which included an Art Walk Reception. Many students, parents, and teachers attended the Awards Reception. The generosity of First Federal and our Guild Members make it possible for five students to attend college with the scholarships they received. The scholarship recipients' work will be exhibited in the Artist Guild Gallery for one month. They are all talented artists; you should visit the Gallery to see their outstanding artwork. Many thanks go to my fellow judges Bonnie Stabler and Rebecca Leonard.

Plein Air Workshop with Sergio Roffo - Sept 26-28, 2012
An elected "fellow" of the American Society of Marine Artists, SergioRoffo will teach a 3-day workshop in Charleston, combining in-studio demonstration and outdoor coastal landscape painting. Sergio will emphasize the techniques and principles of plein air painting of coastal marine landscapes, beginning each morning with a discussion of the aesthetic issues and techniques of art as he demonstrates and completes a field study. After the demonstration, students will receive individual personal instruction and encouragement while completing their own painting "Alla Prima" (in one sitting). The objectives of this workshop will be:
- - Learning how to see nature's details
- - Understanding the interplay of light and shadow
- - Knowing how to mix the right colors
- - Eliminating the fear of outdoor painting
Sergio's depictions of the New England landscape have been included in a variety of museum exhibitions and have earned him many awards, including two prestigious "Grumbacher Gold Medals" and the "Yankee Sagendorph Award" presented by Yankee Magazine. In 1994, Sergio was the winner of the Massachusetts Duck Stamp, and he holds the honor of being one of the youngest artists to be designated a "Copley Master" by the Copley Society of Boston. Sergio is represented locally by the M Gallery at 11 Broad Street and his work can be seen at his website: www.sergioroffo.com.
The workshop is geared toward all levels of student who work in pastels, oils, or water media. Some plein air experience is recommended. For more information about this workshop, please contact Tina Mayland (Tina@TinaMaylandArt.com)
Landscape Workshop with Albert Handell - Nov 12-14, 2012 This indoor and plein air landscape workshop will be a unique opportunity to see Master Painter Albert Handell demonstrate his 3 favorite techniques painting trees, water and waterfalls. On Day 1 in the morning, Albert will demonstrate a pastel painting from beginning to conclusion, followed by in-depth help with each student at their easel in the afternoon. On Day 2, Albert will demonstrate a painting starting with watercolor as an underpainting, followed by pastel. The afternoon will include in-depth help with each student in a plein air environment. On Day 3, Albert will demo an oil painting, starting with oil washes and finishing with a combination of brush and pallet knife, for a truly eye-opening effect. The afternoon will be student painting en plein air, followed by a critique. Albert is a nationally and internationally known artist. He was elected by the Pastel Society of America to their Hall of Fame in 1987, one of 3 living artists so honored. Albert has also authored several books on pastel and oil painting techniques and on painting composition. He is represented locally by the M Gallery at 11 Broad Street and his work can be seen at his website: www.alberthandell.com The workshop is open to all levels, in oils only. Some plein air experience is recommended. For more information about this workshop, please contact Tina Mayland (Tina@TinaMaylandArt.com) |
I SAY ROAST HIM A LITTLE...SO LONG AND HELLO AGAIN, PRESIDENT GIBB
By John Albrecht
So, how do you save a drowning lawyer? Take your foot off his head!
Since our President is a lawyer, and from New York, let's have some fun admitting how much we appreciate Ron doing such a fine job this year. A minor amount of poking around and more sincerity in this piece, but I hope you catch my drift about this Guild President who I have come to admire, as well as a Board I have enjoyed getting to know. My 22-year old daughter says I'm good at saying awkward, inappropriate things. So here goes looking back at the year and trying to describe what the heck we have been up to for the last 10 months or so.
- Meeting #1 - Guild-gallery relationship -Yes, the gallery is part of the Guild. Took us several presidents, a lawyer, and a 2 ½ hour meeting to get it straight, but I think we all get it now.
- Insurance policy review - I tell you, lawyers are good at reading the fine print. Word is, when Ron saw the placement of Susan North's latest nude, (prominently on the red wall at the back of the gallery), I heard he upgraded the insurance to cover plate glass. Although he's been discrete, I've seen him looking. One look at that piece of art (pun intended), and the guy was savvy enough to upgrade our insurance. You know some knucklehead will stumble out of a local brew house, and try to jump through our plate glass window when they get a glimpse of that beautiful lady. I'm just sayin', if Susan North keeps up with the nude paintings, it's bound to happen. Hmm, I wonder when she will embark upon her male subject, and from what "viewpoint" that will be?
- Oh, Susan's wonderful art reminds me...rack cards. Ron took initiative to get rack cards made, and enlisted the help of Brian Koury and others to drop them at over 60 businesses in the Lowcountry. So the next time you're wondering how these jolly tourists found the gallery, thank Ron, Brian, and his minions for getting these out.
You know why the Bar Association said lawyers couldn't have sex with their clients? They don't want clients getting billed twice for the same service.
- Lawyers are also good at watching money. Did you know our grant money increased by $5,000 to $12,000 this year? Well, it did, thanks to Ron and Steve's hard work (must plug Superman Steve Jacobs on that one too). Here's a guy who willingly sits in a stuffy no-window corner office with boxes stacked all around him for 6 - 7 days a week? Does he ever go home? I love that guy, and he's one heck of a pianist. I wish I had his hair.
What do you have when a lawyer is buried up to his neck in sand? A shortage of sand.
- Sales training for Artists - Now that's funny! Ever tried to push a piece of rope?
- President's reception - He's a brave man to do it, but the reception went very well. Hey, don't blame me for being a little nervous. I've seen some of you "crazies" at a Members meeting.
The difference between a lawyer and a trampoline? You take off your shoes to jump on a trampoline.
- No Board Meeting in October - Just plain heavenly!
- Christmas Party - Yeah, I said CHRISTMAS. You got a problem with dat? Anyway, lots of fun, and this kicked off the newly announced Guild High School Scholarship fund. Many thanks to Diane Snider, Susan North, and many others who helped with this event.
- Exhibitions - I know why Russell has curtains on his van. He never goes home. What a tireless, hard working guy for the Guild. Somebody buy that man a razor!
- Budgetary - At Ron's direction, it's nice to know the current President of the Guild will work up the new budget for the incoming President. This prevents someone from coming in "cold" in the budgeting process and should smooth out the transition. Better check that last budget line though...president's fund. I sense a tropical getaway...yeah right.
- Jewelry! - Now this is a topic that can get the juices flowing. Under development, and coming to a storefront window near you.
Okay, so if you didn't like the job I did this year, complain to Susanne Frenzel because she "recruited" me. She proved that I am a sexist, as it was too difficult to say "NO" to a foreign lady on the other end of the phone with a sexy accent asking me to help her out. Did I hear her say, "Sucker!" as I hung up the phone? Maybe, maybe not, but I have enjoyed my position as Secretary, and man, I love that accent. |
