December 2011

Rob Gibb

Greetings to all fellow Guild members!   As we enter the last month of the year, everything seems to crowd into thirty-one fast paced days. Thanksgiving is barely over, and now the rush is on to shop, clean, plan, and to find that perfect present.

We at the Guild, are concentrating on three main things this month. First, on November 20th we put up our Christmas tree loaded with miniature original paintings.  Wow, talk about the perfect gift to set on someone's table or hang from the wall!  When you are downtown, check these little treasures out, and see if you don't agree.

Second, we are having a party!  On December 13th you are all invited to the Charleston Artist Guild's Holiday Party. Details are in the Easel. Diane SnIder and Susan North, with all their little helpers, are working hard to make this a warm and festive event everyone will enjoy.  Please join us in friendship and joy to celebrate the Season.

And last, but not least, the Guild is launching the Charleston Artist Guild Scholarship Fund. This will be a permanent fund, maintained by our members, to provide funds for talented art students who need help with college tuition. If you can help, a donation in any amount will be greatly appreciated. For the student who wants to attend college, who needs the money, and who is asking for help, it truly is the perfect present.

So, until I see you at the party, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and I hope you and your family have a joyous Holiday Season.

Ron Gibb, President

Kenneth Hanger

December Featured Artist

December 1 - December 31

Opening: Friday, December 2 from 5-8 PM

(Receptions are open to the public)

"TEAPOTS AND CHINA"

"Brother and Sister" by Hanger

The Charleston Artist Guild announces Kenneth Hanger as the featured artist for December.  His work will be highlighted throughout the month of December starting Dec 1 and ending Dec 31.  Please join Ken for his opening reception on Friday, December 2, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.  His show, whimsically entitled "Teapots and China", will feature work from a recent trip to China and paintings of his wife's tea sets.  He enjoys exploring the softness of watercolor and the vividness of oil as well as the spontaneity of plein air painting.

Kenneth has long been drawn to painting.  He began to pursue art seriously in the 1980s and on into the 1990s taking many classes with artists such as Rhett Thurman, Mary Mulligan, and Charles Reid.  He then transitioned from his first love, watercolors, to oils and continued to work with Kim English and Bill Dunlap.

While continuing to evolve as an artist, Kenneth has also found the time to be a full time interventional cardiologist and triathlete.  Vist the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery located on 160 East Bay St Sun-Sat 11am -6pm.  Take time to visit China while in Charleston and have a spot of tea!

To contact the artist email khanger5@comcast.net.

Plein Air Oil Workshop - March 6-8, 2012 with Jeanette Le Grue

Painting by Jeanette Le Grue

Jeanette Le Grue is a California-based oil painter who shows her work in galleries and museums throughout the United States. She has been the subject of feature articles in Southwest Art Magazine, American Artist Magazine, and Plein Air Scene. She has received numerous awards, including First Place in the American Impressionist Society's National Show, the Irvine Museum Award at the Hawaii Plein Air Event, the Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, and the Helen De Cozen Award at the American Artists Grand National Exhibition in New York. To see Jeanette's work, go to www.legrue.com.

Jeanette is an excellent teacher who uses daily demonstrations to emphasize seeing the abstract design in the landscape. Painting a la prima, she focuses on seeing the big shapes, and relationships of grays to color and color harmony. She has coined the F.I.S.H. School of Color, which is her trademarked approach. Jeanette takes beginners to professional level, and gives plenty of individual attention.

Here is Jeanette's description of her workshop:

The goal of this workshop is for you to learn and practice principals and techniques that will enable you to become a better plein air painter. First you will learn how to SEE the abstract design, essential for every successful painting. You will plan your painting then paint your plan. I will show you how to simplify and organize your painting so that you capture the essence of your subject. You will start by creating a small value painting so that you learn to see how painting is not about objects, but about the design. You will feel how relationships between light and shadow express emotion. I'm a "hands on" teacher. Through lectures, demos, and individual daily critique at the easel, each student will grow in their ability and discover their own strengths. A group critique will follow at the end of this class.

For more information about the workshop and registration, contact Tina Mayland at Tina@TinaMaylandArt.com.  The price for this workshop is $430 by Dec 1 and $475 after for CAG members and $450 by Dec 1 and $500 after for non-CAG members.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR EXTRAORDINARY ARTS EXHIBIT

February 1 - 4, 2011

Gaillard Auditorium

Extraordinary Artwork
Extraordinary Artwork

Our Guild sponsors the Extraordinary Art Exhibit annually for lowcountry area special needs students.  We usually  have about 100 entries from many schools. It is a highlight of the art program for the children to exhibit their artwork in public and possibly win a prize. Every entrant will receive a gift certificate for art supplies. After a reception of donuts and soft drinks, we have a local art judge present the ribbons. Steve Jacobs is there playing his key board, and all the families are invited to join the festivities. It is truly a wonderful outreach event for the students & families AND for our members as well!

VOLUNTEER WITH RESPITE CARE ALZHEIMER'S PROGRAM

A new opportunity to

participate in the guild's outreach programs has arrived! Respite Care Ministries offers

programs twice weekly in three locations (West

Ashley, Mt.Pleasant, and Johns Island) to people in the early stages of

Alzheimer's and other

memory loss ailments.

These folks are still able

to live at home and

interact in social groups.

The RCM staff is looking

for artists who would

volunteer just once - or as often as you wish - to offer mini-workshops to their participants. If you can spare just a few hours, consider offering your talents to these folks. They will provide all materials needed; you provide the talent and love. Please contact

Laura Stefanelli, Executive Director, at the Respite Care Charleston website.

Honorable Intentions is a saga about a man who inherits a Charleston plantation only to find himself a target of those wanting to possess it.  His ony route of escape?  A time machine.  That's where the real adventure begins.

In The Factory the world economy collapses.  Jack, retired Lt. Colonel, finds a new job at a factory in Atlanta.  Little does he know the world of hurt he's about to enter.  No rights, little respect - something has to change.
