President's LetterNovember 2011

Greetings to all fellow Guild members! Upon my return from a grand vacation in Spain, the first thing I want to say is thank you, Pam Schussel, for doing all the hard work I would have been doing and for covering our October general meeting. You have been a great help to the Guild and to me personally.
As fall sets in, we all are anticipating a busy schedule. As you read The Easel you can see we have a lot of events scheduled so be ready with your art and participate in all you can.
Especially because the schedule is so hectic, it is important to know what role our Charleston Artist Guild plays in these activities. We are a diverse group. Some of us turn to art to reflect and to create a way to avoid the stresses of the fast and demanding world around us. For others, our personal dreams necessitate public recognition and a volume of art sales.
Whatever your dream, the Charleston Artist Guild is here to help you achieve it. For those who aspire to a full career in art, the Guild has proven the way. Many of our former dreamers are now professional artists and gallery owners. You can take part in as much or as little of what the Guild offers, as you choose. There are classes and workshops for everyone. There are exhibits and shows for all talent levels.
The special beauty of the Guild is that we do not forget the dreams of those less fortunate. Our outreach programs help the young, the old and the infirm to achieve their dreams too.
So, don't get totally caught up in the demands of a busy schedule. Be true to your dreams, and remember - we make art simply because we love to.

Charleston Artist Guild announces
Patricia Huff
November Featured Artist
November 1 - November 30
Opening: Friday, November 4 from 6-8 PM
(Receptions are open to the public)
"A TALE OF TWO CITIES"
 | | "Gondolas" by Huff |
Patricia Huff's Featured Artist Show opens on November 4 with a reception from 5:00 pm until 8:00pm at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery, 160 East Bay Street. "A Tale of Two Cities" will take you into the heart of Venice and Charleston, two cities with many similarities. Patricia first fell in love with Venice over 35 years ago during her college studies abroad in Italy. Just as Venice travel is based on bridges over canals, Charleston bridges her marshes and waterways to travel. Both cities' skylines are dotted with church spires, while window boxes and roof gardens dot their cityscapes. Boats are part of the lifeblood of each city and the arts and handcrafts are part of each city's traditions. The love of good food and wonderful restaurants are also shared by both cities. Patricia says her love of Venice actually led her to make Charleston her home.
 | | "Docked" by Huff |
The sounds, the smells, the color of the light, the water reflections, and a love of historical buildings are just a few reasons why these cities are Patricia's favorites and are the backdrop for this show. But more than this, the people in both of these places share a love of life, family, food, and arts - La Dolce Vita!
Patricia's work will be highlighted throughout the month of November. To see more of her work and experience her view of Charleston and Venice, visit the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery during gallery hours Mon- Sun 11am-6pm. Contact Patricia Huff at 843-243-0714 or patbillhuff@earthlink.net. |

Plein Air Oil Workshop - March 6-8, 2012 with Jeanette Le Grue
Jeanette Le Grue is a California-based oil painter who shows her work in galleries and museums throughout the United States. She has been the subject of feature articles in Southwest Art Magazine, American Artist Magazine, and Plein Air Scene. She has received numerous awards, including First Place in the American Impressionist Society's National Show, the Irvine Museum Award at the Hawaii Plein Air Event, the Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, and the Helen De Cozen Award at the American Artists Grand National Exhibition in New York. To see Jeanette's work, go to www.legrue.com. Jeanette is an excellent teacher who uses daily demonstrations to emphasize seeing the abstract design in the landscape. Painting a la prima, she focuses on seeing the big shapes, and relationships of grays to color and color harmony. She has coined the F.I.S.H. School of Color, which is her trademarked approach. Jeanette takes beginners to professional level, and gives plenty of individual attention. Here is Jeanette's description of her workshop: The goal of this workshop is for you to learn and practice principals and techniques that will enable you to become a better plein air painter. First you will learn how to SEE the abstract design, essential for every successful painting. You will plan your painting then paint your plan. I will show you how to simplify and organize your painting so that you capture the essence of your subject. You will start by creating a small value painting so that you learn to see how painting is not about objects, but about the design. You will feel how relationships between light and shadow express emotion. I'm a "hands on" teacher. Through lectures, demos, and individual daily critique at the easel, each student will grow in their ability and discover their own strengths. A group critique will follow at the end of this class. For more information about the workshop and registration, contact Tina Mayland at Tina@TinaMaylandArt.com. The price for this workshop is $430 by Dec 1 and $475 after for CAG members and $450 by Dec 1 and $500 after for non-CAG members.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR EXTRAORDINARY ARTS EXHIBIT
February 1 - 4, 2011
Gaillard Auditorium

Extraordinary Artwork |
Our Guild sponsors the Extraordinary Art Exhibit annually for lowcountry area special needs students. We usually have about 100 entries from many schools. It is a highlight of the art program for the children to exhibit their artwork in public and possibly win a prize. Every entrant will receive a gift certificate for art supplies. After a reception of donuts and soft drinks, we have a local art judge present the ribbons. Steve Jacobs is there playing his key board, and all the families are invited to join the festivities. It is truly a wonderful outreach event for the students & families AND for our members as well!
 | |
Extraordinary Art Students Honored. |
We need volunteers to lend a hand: picking up artwork, setting up the exhibit, setting up refreshments, and especially attending/co-hosting the event. We will have only one organizational meeting on Nov. 5th at the Guild Gallery.
PLEASE CONTACT SUSAN TROTT AT sdtrott@yahoo.com or 795-6091.

Honorable Intentions is a saga about a man who inherits a Charleston plantation only to find himself a target of those wanting to possess it. His ony route of escape? A time machine. That's where the real adventure begins.
