BOOKSTORE OF THE MONTH

A Q&A with Phyllis Simon of Vancouver Kidsbooks

Kidsbooks

How long has the bookstore been in business?

Since Nov 1, 1983.

Do you have a favourite book?

Now that's hard to choose! All time fave: Pride and Prejudice; children's picture book: The Story of Holly and Ivy by Rumer Godden and illustrated by Barbara Cooney.

Do you have a favourite Anansi or Groundwood book?

I love Marie-Louise Gay's Stella and Sam series.

What are your current hot sellers?

Pete the Cat, The Hunger Games, the Elephant and Piggie series, Scaredy Squirrel, and Ivy and Bean.

What's the most interesting request or customer experience you've had?

Last January, a 10-year-old customer emailed to ask whether we had any plans to celebrate the release of the new Penderwicks novel. Er, I said, nooooo, but let me ask if the author could come to Kidsbooks. After sending a quick note to the publisher, the good news came back that yes, we could! And so, due to one keen fan, we had a wonderful time with Jeanne Birdsall and 125 loyal readers!

Does your bookstore have an overall philosophy?

Celebrate the joy of reading with our community and put the right books in each child's hands to ensure a lifelong love of reading!

Thanks for speaking with us, Phyllis!
