I know that one reason I have such a problem with portion control is I have this deep seated belief that equality is directly related to getting the same portion size. I clearly remember growing up thinking it was unfair that my brothers got more than I did. Logical arguments wouldn't have mattered. Just because my three brothers ranged from 7 to 13 years older than I was, just because they were boys and just because they were growing wouldn't have made me feel any less discriminated against. And to this day I still want to have the same portion size as my husband. It's actually a family joke now that my inner 5 year old comes out any time anyone gets a larger portion than I do. But it's time to change this limiting belief. This week I'm working on it by:
- Starting with half of what I think I want;
- Giving myself permission to go back for the other half if I still want it AFTER I've finished;
- Acknowledge and accept my reaction and desire for equality;
- Thank my 5 year old for wanting to protect me; and
- Look into other techniques that could be helpful in changing this limiting belief: visualization; tapping; or NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) exercises.
What will you do to change a limiting belief this week?
