Aloha,
If you would like to LISTEN to this article, click here. When you can't decide where to start because you're overwhelmed and feel like your space, your stuff or your life is out of control, the best place to start is with a small project. I start in areas I use everyday; my purse, my car, my reading table or my silverware drawer. These everyday small spaces usually don't contain big decisions. They've become cluttered by everyday living but rarely hold items that are awaiting a decision (i.e., keep, toss, or give away). The items are there because we haven't made time to put them back where we got them from or get them to where they're going. Your car may have a box of stuff that you were taking to the office or your backpack may have a notebook you needed for a project that is now done. Organizing these everyday spaces first will be easier, quicker and give you a sense of control that can boost your motivation to keep going. Most of your time will be spent on throwing away the trash, returning items that live there and putting the rest of the things back where they belong. Sometimes there is a need for organizing tools and I've suggested a few below that I've tried and love. Excuse me, I have to take the empty ink cartridges that are in the back of my car to the store for recycling. |
