I knew moving my work space out of my home and into my office was going to bring huge benefits and a few challenges. Yesterday, I got to experience one of the best benefits I know. An issue came up in my work that got me frustrated. But since I didn't have a refrigerator to head to, I got my walking shoes on (I keep them at the office now) and headed out for a short walk around the block. What a great way to blow off steam and clear the head. If I'd been at home I know that my attempt to walk it off would have included a trip by the refrigerator and could have ended on the couch.
Here's how I'm making the most of being "at work":
- a pair of walking shoes kept at work
- walk to appointments when I can (including lunch)
- make the appointments 'walking meetings'
- pack my lunch in the morning
- remember to take a 3 pm snack (still working on that)
- take a real lunch break (do not eat at your desk!)
- take breaks; stand up, move around, stretch and even go for a short walk
- use the structure of the day to schedule in exercise
I also know there are challenges to making healthier choices at the worksite, as celebrations may provide opportunities for cakes, candies and other goodies. But packing my lunch, having a set snack ready to grab and bringing in my favorite (healthier) dishes for potlucks is my plan to deal with that challenge.
How will you make 'at work' a healthier part of your week?
