Aloha,
If you would like to LISTEN to this article, click here. Somewhere between our vision of what we want (such as, organized space, well-managed time, or rows of dhucks) and the actual implementation, we can get side tracked, lost, overwhelmed and disappointed. This is when you may want to give up on filing your papers, clearing the clutter in the spare room, maintaining the small islands of order you have accomplished, and maybe you'll even want to give up on yourself.
I was reminded of this crucial point (when vision meets reality) while painting my new office. I had imagined how amazing the paint would make my office feel and look. But towards the end of the day as I finished the baseboards, I stood back and took a look. My response was not just 'no' but a heart dropping 'I hate it'.
Instead of throwing my hands up, walking away and giving up on the project, I took a step back, shrugged my shoulders and reminded myself that I was tired and hungry so the "hate it" could have been a bit exaggerated. Never establish a firm opinion when you're tired. The next day the vision of what my office was going to be still couldn't live up to reality. The space wasn't big enough and I didn't have enough time and money to fix all the little things I saw. But by returning to my intentions for the new space and asking what was "good enough?" it allowed me to realize that repainting the baseboard was all that I needed to do. And now I love the paint job and my office. It's fun, energizing and makes me smile which is what I wanted. I didn't need it perfect to do that.
For your next organizing project here are some questions to ask before, after and most definitely during the process:
- What will I be doing in that space or with that free time?
- What's my desired outcome?
- What will that give me?
- What does it look like? Feel like?
- What is 'good enough' to achieve that outcome?
- What will I do when it doesn't come out as expected. -- hopefully your answer is "take a break and ask these questions again" or maybe "enjoy what I have accomplished."
If you would like help in establishing your desired outcome or support with a project, call me at 808.969.3800 or email me at dhucks@dhucks.com I can help over the phone (almost anywhere), as well as in-person (for Big Island residents only).
