Past, Present or Future You
| July 2011 | |
Aloha,
Often times the items we have stacked up in the spare bedroom, piled in the garage or tossed in the back of the closet are items that represent either our past accomplishments & perceived failures or our future dreams of what we might do and who we might become. But if our past and our future continue to push out our present life by taking over our space, our time and our energy, we will no longer be living today.
I thought I had this down, and for the most part I have. But this last week I was faced with a moment of clarity and understanding. For the millionth time I had put reading on my priority list. Not fun, lay back in the hammock and relax reading, but build my knowledge and expertise reading. I think that "career building" reading crept onto my priority list some twenty years ago with my first corporate job. Before that, all reading was knowledge & expertise building, i.e. school. But I read somewhere (and I probably still have the article in my IDEA box) that reading an hour a day in my field would make me an expert in 5 years. So I began building my stack and list of books to read.
However, in the last 20 years I have yet to really find that hour a day to read routinely. I'm sure my continuing education classes and certifications count toward building my expertise, but that wasn't how I defined my reading hour.
But then, 'aha', I realized that I actually prefer to listen to podcasts or audio books while I drive. Instead of living with a 20 year old priority that doesn't fit my life today (if it ever did), I've accepted that my preferred format for reading is actually listening to books and informative articles.
I'm letting go of past expectations and applying present intentions to my day. Which is why I am providing an mp3 audio recording of my newsletters from now on. Click here for this month's edition and enjoy the freedom of being mobile. You can also listen to my other newsletter, Small Steps.
If you would like help & support in moving out of the past and staying focused on the present, call me at 808.969.3800 or email me at dhucks@dhucks.com I can help over the phone (almost anywhere), as well as in-person (for Big Island residents only).

Cleaning Help for Women with Cancer
|
|
Sometimes the clutter and disorganization occurs because your life has been disrupted by health concerns. If you no longer have the energy and ability to focus like you once did, let go of the judgment that you should still be able to do everything you used to. Sometimes expectations have to change and sometimes we have to ask for help.
Sometimes getting that help can be easier than you thought.
Cleaning for a reason™ provides free professional housecleaning and maid services to women undergoing treatment for cancer. To find a participating cleaner in your area, go to cleaningforareason.org. And we have one here in East Hawaii -- Aloha all Natural Cleaning Services.
